iPod fitting

Hi All
First time round for me - never owned a Porsche (until 3wks ago) & never written on a forum. Can't believe how fantastic our new car is, my wife thinks I'm obsessed & as usual she's right![;)]
Can anyone help or advise though please - we have the PCM unit & a CDC but would like to fit an iPod adaptor. I've done a bit of research & it appears a Dension 500 kit may do the trick but before I take the plunge & shell out more money does anybody have any views or tech advice? or any alternatives?

Welcome Mark!

Dension seems to be the popular choice here, albeit expensive. I'm not sure what the other options are, but hopefully someone will be along with other ideas........

Being my usual blonde self here, I bought something off ebay last week, it fits into the cigarette lighter and plugs into your ipod and plays through the radio. Absolutely brilliant gadget.

Griffin iTrip Auto SmartScan FM Transmitter for iPod

Just thought I would mention this, oh and welcome to the forum and Porsche ownership [;)]

Hi, I fitted a dension 500. Its been nothing but bother and has never worked properly. If I know what I know now I'd have plugged in the ipod transmitter thingy we use for my wifes car! It now stands me at over £400 and hours of time. I've had 4 techies look at it and it doesn't do what it says on the tin.

Good luck with whatever you use, but DON'T do the Dension!

I got a guy to fit a charger/connector that resides in the glove box, was £200 (cash), I'm very happy with it. He was suggested by the OPC but is independent of them, came to the house, took about 40 mins.

What about a Becker GP - looks OEM and is available with iPod adaptor. Very happy with mine, although I don't have the iPod bit.

I have an '03 996T with CDR23 [:'(] and have the Mobridge device supplied and fitted through JZ Machtech.
Once you have set up (a max of 6) playlists on your iPod (takes 5 mins), it works really well. Each playlist has a max of 99 tracks and replicates a CD if you see what I mean. Cost was about GBP500 IIRC just over a year ago.
There is a version of the Mobridge for those with PCM too.
The only downside is that the 6CD is disconnected but I do still have the single CD on the HU. Having tried the iTrip, this works much better - especially on long journies.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Simon

I have had a Dension 500 for two years and it works fine. I can control all the playlists through the PCM as I would on my Ipod (albeit not as quickly) and there is no visiable signs in the cabin. I wouldn't be without it.

I cetainly don't think its a waste of money. As long as you get it fitted correctly it does exactly what it claims it can do. The new model even allows the CDC to stay in the fibre optic loop.

I too fitted the Dension unit, took me about an hour and works without problem. I use it with an 8Gb USB memory stick full of MP3's instead an Ipod.

I've got a GW 500 in my 996 TT with a 80GB hard drive connected via USB. It took about an hour and a half all together - connected in the front boot next to the CD changer. I'd say it does exactly what it says on the tin - takes a little while to get used to the menu structures, but that's what you get for trying to get an 80GB hard drive to behave like a CD changer. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I fitted a Solisto kit that replaces the multi changer, it's a good kit easy to fit and well made. I did replace with the Becker Grand Prix only because i saw one going cheap. If you or anyone are interested in the kit i'd be looking for £70 inc secure delivery I have and can supply the original invoice.

If this isn't of interest i would recommend the Grand Prix if you can find one.
