iPod in a 993 ???

Almost embarassed to ask this - OK so there's nothing on earth that sounds better that the 3.6 flat 6 breathing through sports air box and blowing out through RSR mufflers, but on the odd occasion I do listen to music in the car, and would like to know if anyone out there has explored a way of plugging an iPod into the Porsche CD/Tuner.

I have the iPod thingy that plays through the radio, but it is too flakey. I don't want to change my CD/Radio for an aftermarket unit, it has to stay original, but could just about stretch to a small jack plug discretely mounted....anyone got any ideas on the art of the possible here ???

Thanks

Neil

I bought a Becker Cascade. It does iPod, handsfree and navigation in one OEM style unit! Bought it on Fleabay. Still find myself driving about with the volume down though...

Me too - the latest Becker's look very like the originals, but have all mod-cons. You will not feel like you have moved away from the original.

But if you really insist, no idea if this would work, if you have a connection for a CD changer on the back on your head unit the Becker "iPod cable" might fit it (because that is how it works on the modern beckers - iPod cable replaces cable to a CD changer - who would want a 6CD changer when the iPod gives you the entire music collection...). Suspect this will not work for software reasons....

You bet! I'll keep my Haircut 100 tunes for the living room....

As a point of interest I've just linked my ipod into my MP3 unit which was straight forward looking for somewhere to put the ipod was a diffrent matter. I finally decided to put it in the front ashtray in the dash. I removed the tray and a lamp connection which lights the tray up which was an ideal size to pass the extension cable through from behind the dash. So now if i want to use my ipod i pop open the ashtray, plug it in and away i go, close the tray and if i forget to unplug and hide it when I get out of the car as I always do in my SAAB then it dosen't matter as it's safely hidden.

Thanks guys - between the info here and what I found from the web, seems the stock fited CDR21 cannot have a software mod to interface with the iPod, a complete no go. Thanks for the idea of the Cascade, but already have sat nav with TomTom, so wasn't really up for big bucks there. Settled for a Becker Grand Prix, does the job well, not too expensive and has bluetooth too. Challenge was finding the iPod cable, apparently out of stock in UK everywhere, but found it at CiCi in Channel Islands, mail order will be here Tuesday. Problem solved.

Just got to decide on whether to dismantle ashtray light, good idea Mike, think will go for that. Was going to mount in the glove box, but a long way to reach across.

Cheers

Neil

Once Ipod on shuffle with 30Gb of music....... no requirement to reach across......

Does the head unit drive the Ipod? or vv?

I have an alpine unit and can drive the ipod from this...so no need to touch Ipod once plugged in......

Hi,

my car was fitted with a Nakamichi head unit by the PO. It has auxillary inputs at the back of the unit.. I purchsaed a special lead/ connector from www.davidnavone.com in the USA that plugs into the aux inputs at one end and utilises the connector at the base of the Ipod on the other. it has a power lead that should charge the ipod when it is connected but I found it caused a lot of interference so I disconnected it. I routed the lead into the ashtray and that's where my ipod sits.

Works extremely well and all for $12. The only downside is that you can ot control the Ipod from the head unit.
