iPod in a 993

JB 3.2

New member
Has anyone come up with a good solution of where to put an iPod in a 993.

I'm particularly interested in where to locate the iPod while driving and a route for the cable which in my case comes out the back of the stereo.

The glovebox was my first thought but there does not appear to be an easy route for the cable into the glovebox.

John,
Glove box is the place without a doubt - assuming your stereo is able to track-switch etc and you don't need to touch the iPod except when you need to unplug to add more tracks.

Cable to mine enters glove box through a round hole right at the rear of the right hand side of the glove box inside. I got my local audio shop to do all the work so i don't know if this hole was previously filled with a gromet, but if they drilled it they must have done it very neatly because there is no sign of disturbance of the lining material.

Did mine at the weekend and made a discreet slot in the back right hand side of the glove box where there is a small triangle shaped flat (you'll see where I mean if you hook it out)

yep - same as most people - I got my drill out and popped a hole in the upper right back corner of the glovebox...

Mine has the cable end in the ashtray... I connect an extension cable to it and the ipod sits in the depression where the handbrake falls into when released ... not so neat but I didnt do the initial install...

Mines different. Cable is routed under the edge of the centre console and into a slot cut in a trinket tray that replaced the cassette holder. The ipod fits perfectly in the bottom of the tray and can't slide around. Cover with a rubber covered plate to act as a false bottom and you still have a useful tray to use as well.

That's a neat idea

My iPhone lives in the glovebox.  Stereo install guys did it about a year ago.  Works really well.  The iPhone downloads tracks via itunes/wireless broadband, I plug it in, stick it in the glovebox and off we go.

It's a revelation after years spent juggling CDs.  I think there are still a couple stuck under the seat somewhere.

I got a sony bluetooth stereo from halfords then a bluetooth dongle for the ipod (bluetooth builtin to newer ipods). Better sound quality (no a/d back and forth) and you can pop the ipod in your pocket/bag etc. Only downer is it eats the battery up a bit quicker. It will also connect to your phone at the same time for hands free and mute the music if your phone rings. For 100 quid or whatever it cost fitted, absolutely brilliant.

It only takes a couple of minutes and half a dozen screws to pop out the Glovebox itself.. Had to do it when disconnecting the rear spoiler relay/brain and when fitting our iPOD dock, which presents itself to our Sony head unit as a CD AutoChanger, allowing nearly total control via the head unit..

My ITouch is kept in the glove compartment. To route the cable from the rear of the set, a Becker Indianapolis, the glove compartment light was removed and a small slot cut for the cable, plug fed through and light replaced.

I touch stays in the glove compartment all the time and is controlled entirely from the radio in exactly the same way as if I had it in my hand. that is all play lists, artists, songs etc are listed and selectable. The ITouch is also charged from the car.

I also have some Podcasts on the ITouch and these will play. So I am able to listen to hints for using Photoshop. How daft is that!

Seems the best way as far as I am concerned.

Bluetooth/wireless does seem like the way to go, but the only downside is the iPhone is a bit battery hungry as we know, so I'll keep mine plugged in for now, as that charges it as well.

Yes, my iPhone/Alpine combo does that. CDs are suddenly looking very outdated.

Whatever will they think of next ? Music/Brain implants, I suppose.

I popped the radio out dropped a cable down to the ash tray, pulled the ash tray liner out drilled an entry and the i-pod sits there with no cables on show any where. Easily accessible from the drivers seat and push closed to hide when you get out of the car.

Sounds good, but where do you keep the loose change for parking ? Mine lives in the Ash Tray. Decisions, Decisions.

Thank you all for your suggestions, the idea of placing the iPod in the centre console, appeals to me most as its more contained although running the cable may not be so simple.

Second choice is the glove box and I now understand the options for routing the cable. My only concern with the glove box is preventing the iPod from moving around during driving. I will probably wrap it in some anti-slip mat which seems to be quite effective.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

In my Elise I just used velcro to attach an ipod case to the sill. I'd use the same principle if using the glovebox.

Good idea Mike, although I seem to recall finding anywhere for storage in an Elise is difficult, hence your resourcefulness?

Just done what I think is the perfect solution... but probably only for nano ipod rather than classic/itouch size. I've fitted sony mex bt2600 with an ipod adaptor so the ipod can be controlled from the head unit. the connector is routed so the nano can sit on the little carpeted ledge above the centre console switches. (even when gunning it round bends it doesn't slide off)
But the real best bit, is that I've fitted a sony 'remote commander' to the steering column, so I can operate all the functions from there without reaching forward for the head unit controls: Don't know about everyone else, but I do find it a bit of a reach to do that. Not really an issue if your not a track switcher, but I am.... I'm always repeating and skipping tracks, and for this my set is brilliant.... I love it.

Also, that little ledge is over hung by the dash so even if I forget to unplug the ipod, it's not obviously visible from outside so less of a tempation to the scrotes!
