Irratic Gauges

The oil level gauge has started to behave irratically, firstly it would rise and drop depending on whether the clutch was depressed, now it just reads full. Along with this, yesterday I filled the fuel tank, drove 50-60miles and the gauge hasn't moved. I've switched the car off, the needle drops down, but then when I start it again the needle reads full again.

Have I discovered everlasting fuel?? If so get down to the Texaco petrol station on the A23 heading out of Brighton.

If anyone has had and retcified this issue I love to hear from them.

Cheers.

Dan,

The question is whether these two events are connected or not?? An "erratic" oil level gauge is, in fact, pretty normal - they are supposed to be erratic since they are only meaningful when stopped on tickover with hot oil and thermostat open. Being pegged to the full mark is usually a sure sign of being over-filled. Check the level on the dipstick under the appropriate conditions before you start looking for complicated problems.

The fuel level gauge is driven by a small float in the sensor unit attached to the top of the tank and it's entirely possible that the float could get "stuck" - particularly if you filled the tank REALLY full. I have a feeling it's easy enough to open the sensor and check. They sometimes suffer from a leaking float as well which causes it to slowly sink and give a lower reading than is fact.

Another thought is that they COULD be related and you have some voltage specific problem which is affecting both gauges.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave
