Hi,

Looking to buy a porshe turbo but the budget i have only really has cars in the milage range of 60k to 90k now what i am asking is your advice on whether problems are going to start with the engine on a car with the milege or if the engines if looked after will go for many more miles. Car in question would be the 996 turbo around 2000 to 2002

Thanks in advance
Gareth

If it's been well looked after, driven regularly, warmed up and warmed down, and serviced religiously then there's no reason why it shouldn't continue to perform the same way.

What you do need to bear in mind though is that if anything does go wrong (even something as simple as needing a new clutch) it'll be a four figure bill.

I agree, service record and condition are a very good indication of how a car has been looked after.

The 996 Turbo engine is an evolution of the 964 / 993 / GT1 block which is a very different platform from the standard water cooled engines which have gained a rather mixed reputation.

If looked after, they are almost bomb proof --- having been massively (over) engineered from years of race experience.

People talk of a service life of 250,000 miles, I wonder what the highest mileage original numbers car will be ?

Clutches etc are consumables, and should be viewed as much a part of the total service history as the dampers, brakes, disks, wheels, tyres and wheel bearings.

Unlike many cars, these Porsches will outlast many generation of these consumables [;)] --- which is part of the reason why residuals are quite high.

But, it's well worth getting a specialist or main dealer to check the car. In fact, most local (to the vendor) dealers would do this for you.

If a main dealer, this could also form the basis of an extended warranty at up to 10 years and 125,000 miles ....

Thanks for all your info that has helped i expect as with every car at some point all those parts will need to be changed if not changed already so buying a car with 30k could need a new clutch or a car with 80k could need one so i do expect these things can happen but always hope for the best that it wont be required for us soon after buying.

Thanks for your help i have another question i will open in a new post now.
