Is Liqui Moly injector cleaner safe to use in a Porsche?

Hi

This may sound like a strange or even daft question but a friend for mine had major problems with deposits in his engine which stopped it from working and had to be stripped after using Redex as an injector cleaner, and before you ask yes it was a Porsche. (996 gen1)

Any help greatly appreciated

I wouldn't. The only thing I'd put in the fuel tank of a modern car is a decent fuel of the recommended grade. For me that's Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded (99 RON), which I'm led to believe incorporates extra detergents and friction modifiers which negates the requirement for fuel additives such as Liqui Moly.

As I understand, the accepted engineering solution for a suspected injector malfunction, is to remove it from the fuel rail and clean it in an ultrasonic cleaning bath. Afterwards, the spray pattern and delivery volume is checked. If these are within tolerance then the injector is fine and can be reinstalled, if not it should be replaced.

Whilst Liqui Moly may have been tested by Automobil-Prüftechnik Landau (an independent test house), it just seems to me to be a waste of money to use the stuff. I guess though it may be worth a shot if you're down on performance and want to avoid a trip to the garage.

Just my £0.02 worth.

Alan.

I was once given an injector cleaner by a friend who was a Porsche Technician and it was the stuff they use at the dealerships, I can't say it made a terrific difference but it did no harm, so if you want a fuel system cleaner best check with the nearest Porsche Centre

My car is a 2001 Boxster S 986 owned by me from new. It has done 60K miles. I have always used normal unleaded except for a couple of tankfulls of "super" early in its life. The super made no noticeable difference to performance or measured consumption so I gave it up. The Porsche Centre where I bought the car told me that "super" was not necessary. It has had no additives and still runs beautifully. The emissions measured at the annual MOT test have always been spot on. It still has the original injectors and exhaust system including catalysers. Some additives have been reported to affect the catalytic action. Caution in the use of additives would seem to be appropriate.
