Is my clutch ok?

My C4S has now done 22k and 6 (soon 7) track days. There is a creaking noise from the clutch that is audible when operating the pedal with the engine off, and that is making me wonder whether the clutch is beginning to wear out. I know 22k is not a lot, but I don't take prisoners when I'm on a country road, and I suspect that my clutch habits when the car was new were not as (ahem) perfect as they are now [:)]

Anyway, I've never had a clutch fail on me yet in 20 years of driving so I don't actually know what the symptoms of an imminent failure are. Can anyone enlighten me?

(Thanks)

In 4th at 2000 rpm, floor the accelerator. Does the rev counter increase smoothly as the car accelerates, or does it dart up fast and then let the car catch up. The latter is what my car did when the clutch was starting to go.

Hi Michael. I had a new clutch last year - I put a new one in as I was having my RMS done at the time. To be honest I get an audible creek when I depress the clutch - which I can only hear (just) when the engine is off and the driver's door is open! If your clutch is on it's way out it'll slip as it says above. That's the best way to test it. I'm pretty sure that the mechanism is a hydraulic one so there shouldn't be any cables - but mine does sound like a cable working on some sort of leaver mech.

Thanks.

As I recall, revs rise smoothly with increasing speed. I'll try that test asap, though. Generally, the pedal gets floored at some point while I'm out with it, so it shouldn't be too difficult to fit that in!

Nice to know mine isn't the only one that creaks.

It's most probably a dry bush on the clutch actuating arm. Annoying, but harmless. If that is what it is, it's not indicative of trouble on the clutch side of things.

Michael,

I had a spring noise from my replaced clutch. It would occur when the pedal was depressed and could be heard clearly with the engine off in a quiet environment. It turned out the clutch plate was faulty requiring a replacement of this part. I didn't find out what would have happened, had I not had it changed.

It was not the clutch actuator spring which is the one attached to the pedal itself, inside the car.

The only way to confirm what the problem is would be to have the gearbox off and inspect the clutch. do you have a warranty and potential RMS oil leak need fixing? that would cover the labour.

Hmm ... the plot thickens. Strangely enough, now that I think about it, the noise started earlier this year - a couple of months after the annual service (etc) last December. At that service, the OPC noticed a weeping RMS and replaced it under warranty. I wonder if anything was nudged while they were in there?

Something to flag up to them next time I'm in there, methinks. The car has the extended warranty and a full OPC history so all should be covered.
