is the 964 for me?

Hi all

First post and looking for some guidance. Would welcome any input or suggestions.

Why do i want one...
Mid life crisis maybe. On the other hand at 44 the 911 has always been there and an object of desire for me as i have grown up (have i grown up?).

What will i use it for...
Weekend use only for blasting down the local lanes
Donington Park / Bedford Autodrome / Nurburgring
Santa Pod drag strip
911 meets and social events

What do i think i want...
- Guards red
- Love the 964 headlights (the newer slanty models don't appeal)
- Those lovely super flared rear arches
- Reccaro pole position seats (have em in my current car and love em!)
- Firm suspension and as light weight as possible (i realise i cant afford an RS)
- Manual box

Probably have a total budget of up to £20k

As long as you can live with 15 year old ergonomics then yes, there's no problem. I am guessing from your handle that you have an Audi TT. That car has the most fantastic cabin and by comparrison, a 964 will be disappointing as maybe the lack of driver aids (no ESP) As a driving experience, the 964 is as different as chalk and cheese from a modern car, but one of the best there has ever been.
 
Sounds pretty much like why I got one and at the same age too! [:D]

It's brilliant on track and will get better the more you do to it, weight you take out of it. But I would forget the drag strip stuff as you'll get beat by less exotic stuff, set up to only go fast in a straight line. Fast bends are what the 911 is all about.

I'd aim to spend up to £15K of your budget on a fairly standard C2, leaving you £5K for upgrades and emergencies.
 
I went from 964,993, & 996 back to 964 ........ miss it a lot but with my job it had to go as it wasnt geting used.

You will love it !!

You are quite right, current car is an Audi TT Quattro Sport (270 bhp and 5.5 sec 0 > 60). Incredible handling / performance and with ESP it goads you into driving way beyond what seems possible (and you get away with it). It is my current daily transport and is exceptionally reliable. All a little bit clinical.

However, with company car looming i have the opportunity to swap to something far less practical ;-)

A 964 perhaps? True, 15 years old but what a pedigree. Pure class and character and a whole new driving experience to be learned.

i think the biggest revelation will be visability; i found driving a TT not dissimilar to looking through a letter box [:D]
the 964 is a superb car and I think you will have great fun with it.. if you're mostly doing track and back-lane hooning, you might want to consider upgrading the pole positions to some profi's?..
im sure you will have fun whatever you end up with.. the prices are firming up too, so £1000 a year maintanence is bloody good value when there's no depreciation to worry about

PS.. a friend of mine drove my 964 a while back and loved it although couldnt get over the feeling of impending doom.. believe it or not he had never driven a car without traction control, and the only car he's had without stability control was his first car! The handling and your required style of driving is quite different (from anything else) in a 911 and it takes a little time to get used to.. Im still enjoying the challenge of feeling my way around the car nearly 12 months on [:)]

Not the case with a 964 or indeed any 911 before the 996 introduced in 1998. You are on your own. You might find the drive exhilerating or it might just scare you to death often enough to put you off.
 
Go on you know it makes sense and might as well get red if its a menoporsche ! Never care what others think - you are buying it for yourself. I enjoy mine most when theres only me and the car and the road ..
 
A C4 might make a nice transistion from a TT?? The PDAS makes a good effort at controlling things if the rumoured tail-happy nature of the C2 is at all scary.

I agree with Dave. The C4 is an excellent all round car, having recently purchased one after a long search, it is fantastic! Previously having owned a 964 RS, which is obviously more raw and can be (on occasions) tail happy, I would definately recommend the C4 as a good step up from a TT.

I had both the C2 and the C4, but loved the C2 it just felt more agile.

It was a daily drive all year round and yes hard to drive in the winter........ but fun

At least what happens in the winter, happens at slower speed, so it's possibly a better time to learn to drive one.
