Is the extended warranty worth it ?

I have a Boxester S which is two years old on Moday.

I've just had the two year major service at 18,000 miles, should I go for the warranty extension or not ?

All advice gratefully accepted !

Actuarialy, no.

Both Porsche and the underwriter will expect to profit from your premium.

However, insurance involves risk and it could also be beneficial.

Depends on how much risk you wanna take. I had an engine blow on my boxster this year and it was replaced under warranty, but £12K if I had to pay out my own pocket. Fortunately this will happen with a tiny percentage, but what happens if it was you.

Suppose it depends how you drive it to some extent, if you're hard on the car and track it (like I did), then the chances of something going wrong are higher so maybe more value from the warranty.

I'm intending taking it on a GT3 - but it's £28K+ if I burst the engine there, so just considering it as extra insurance.

If you can afford the £750 then it really is a must and the new deal covers the RMS.

IMHO it is overpriced and shouldn't be necessary on a Porsche. If it isn't a wear and tear item they should fix it for free.

I wouldn't be without the warranty.

I also suffered an engine failure and would have faced an unpleasant bill without the warranty...£725 buys a comforting blanket of security.

Also worth considering one of the 3rd party insurance companies who are considerably cheaper.

Maybe find a middle ground that you are happy with but I would recommend having something to fall back on just in case.

Make sure you renew it before it expires. Porsche made a mistake with my dates and it was a mojor hassle to get the "new car " warranty extended. Appartantly there are different kinds of warranties.

One claim can pay for the warranty many times over, esp if you have not had your oil seal replaced yet.

I think you'll find that the new warranty is more expensive than one RMS replacement.

I seem to remember about £1500 on my first (1997) Boxster. I had to pay as the car was an American import and they replaced the clutch for the cost of the parts so it probably included that and a service.
The RMS was replaced in my current car under warranty. You would think a company like Porsche would resolve a design fault within 6 years.
Personally, I would not own a Porsche that did not have a warranty, esp after reading some of the horror stories here. £12,000 for an engine convinces me.
Anyone know what an out of warranty RMS is now?

Tom

I squeezed the RMS warranty invoice out of West london, done in October this year for around £575.

remember, if you pay for the work, then it will have a 12 month warranty, if it is done under warranty, it wont, unless you are very lucky with Porsche Cars.

I would very much doubt any 3rd party (ie non Porsche Cars) warranty would cover RMS.

Oliver,

just call me a sceptic but how bad would the leak have to be before they would pay out for a replacement seal?

Have you any experience of actual payout history? If it is a genuine full strength no quibble warranty including get you home Euro cover for that price then it should be publicised.

Is the warranty available when the normal purchase warranty is about to expire or dose it have to be set up from day one?

And how long do they last purchase and extended?

i took my boxter into colchester porsche for its 2nd annual service (only 7.5k miles) and was told the RMS had gone and that it was outside of warranty (by 1 month!!) and that i had to pay for the works!! I complained and thay said they would try to get it done on a good will warranty. that was 5 months ago and i have not had a call apart from a young lady ofering me an extended warranty for £750,00.

reading this thread has reminded me and i will give them a call in the morning (their used to me complaining as i have a Cayenne as well [:'(])
