Is there a difference between pre-'85 headlamps & '88 944S headlamps?

Hi.

I need to get headlamps for my 'S' & was onto GSF car parts today. They stock pre-'85 944 headlamps but no post-'85 944 headlamps. Is there a difference?

Also, I hear that you can use VW Golf Mk1/Mk2 headlamps in the 944. Do they slot in ok or is there any modification required? (Am guessing the VW lamps might be easier to source).

As per the heading......Yes.

Pre 85's are simple lamp units that sit within a mounting frame. These look like standard lamp units and are perhaps a universal fitment so readily available.

RHD post 85 headlamps are a pain (and may be specific to the 944) They have fixing brackets welded to the back of the bowl. When I replaced mine I ended up buying them from my OPC as I couldn't find them anywhere else.

Thanks for the info guys, it explains why the <'85 lights are so cheap. It's bye-bye to GSF then; wonder why they don't bother to stock >'85 lights. After reading the VW lens thread, I am tempted to go down that route (I have a friend who collects Mk1 & 2 GTI's). Will price the OPC ones first to see just how scarily priced they are.

About £45 as I recall. Call Exeter OPC on 01392 822800, ask for parts (ideally Chris) and say your're from "the forum" and you'll get a good discount.

Fen, you're a star! Will call them tomorrow. Thanks. After spending all that cash at Northways to get my car roadworthy, I'm so broke I'm thinking of applying for Big Brother.[;)]

Hmm, looking at the ECP price I wonder if I remember wrong - let us know how you get on.

Are you a gay social miscreant or a blond ornament with nothing between the ears?

[:D] Thankfully neither. But I'd be the first car obsessive ever in the house. I'd spend my time teasing the ecomentalists.

BTW, I wish they' change my 'ex-club member' to 'club member' as I'm paid up & back in the fold. Not got my member card yet either. Hmmm, maybe they are trying to tell me something.

Anybody, going to the Goodwood Breakfast Club this weekend? Pretty sure I'll be there myslf.

Fen, I got onto OPC Exeter today & spoke to Chris. He quoted £146 for two headlamps (without VAT or a club discount) & £138 for two lamps (including VAT & the club discount). So, not horrific but not pennies either. Also cheaper than ECP! I think I'll be ordering some over the weekend.

Chris is a very nice & helpful guy to talk to.
