Is there a Quick Rack?

Is there a quick rack available for an S2? has anyone tried an 8v 2.5turn rack in an S2 or will they just not fit?

????

I didn't know there was an 8v 2.5 turn rack (are you sure there is?). There IS a 968 motorsport rack and I think I may even have the part number somewhere, but with motorsport parts that still doesn't mean you can actually get one.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I haven't looked into it in huge detail as my steering is heavy enough already and I want to get the (low speed only) electric assistance working before I'm ready to make it any heavier. If you find anything then I'd be very interested to know about it though.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I've definately seen a quick rack for sale, but I don't think it was a Porsche part. At the back of my mind I think there might be one listed somewhere in the Demon Tweaks catalogue, but as I'm at work at the moment I cant check. I remember this as being suitable for my car when I researched it, and would have thought it would fit an S2, but can't be definite.
I was warned against it for fear of the steering too nervous/dangerous on the road, and to be honest my car is already pretty wayward over bumpy roads I decided aginst it.
best regards,
Peter

Oooh, I'm missing a trick to make my car more undriveable...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I just checked the DT catalogue and the 944 is not listed that I can see, but they do say "many more applications available"[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

As far as I'm aware the standard rack in an old manual steering 944 8v is closer to 3.5 turns rather than 2.5, the power assist rack fitted to the 944 and 968 is supposed to be 3.1-ish (my rack is a power assist rack converted to run un assisted hence a quick-ish 3.1 as opposed to the original manual rack).

The only other rack I have heard of and seen an E bay advert for (so it must be real!!) was the 968 motor sport rack, which is supposed to be 2.5 turns. This should be absolutely fine for road use. Lets face it certain TVR's and Mitsubishi Evo's are sold with racks which are 2 turns or less, if they can cope!

Well it was at least a couple of years ago, but I definately saw a 2.5 turns one listed and I'm fairly certain it was in the DT catalogue. I remember investigating it because I needed to replace my rack and considered this as an option briefly.

I agree it probably wouldn't be that bad on a 944, the garage that suggested against it were probably being over cautious (not sure if they'd tried one themselves), but as my car is a bit too stiff for bumpy country roads I'm grateful for gearing I currently have as I think its a little more relaxed this way.

Best regards,
Peter.

My understanding concurs with yours' Steve, except that I heard of the 968 motorsport rack from a more reliable source. I suppose I'd also disagree that a PAS rack with the assistance removed (which I have also) is anything like quick. I'll have to count the turns on my MX5 which is very direct to see what it has, but I expect sub 3 turns.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Many years ago a mate of mine ran an Opel Manta with a Vauxhall Senator straight 6 engine on carbs and that had an unassisted 1.8 turn rack. It needed it as it went sideways more than it went straight ahead. Aside being very heavy at low speed it was fine on the road.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

That apears to be a 911 quick rack, considering early 911 and 944 front suspension is all pretty much "super beetle" I do wonder if maybe this rack can be adapted fairly easily to fit the 944/968 ?

The rack is made by quaife, 2.5 turns 125 pounds, actually quite cheap............no it won't fit the 944 as the steering coupling is centre fixed in early 911's so rack is symetrical rather than offset (RHD and LHD racks are different on the 944) 911 racks are ambidextrous - I think!!!!

As a matter of interest. 944 PAS racks are slightly more quick than manual racks. The quicker the ratio the more effort required to turn it, PAS deals with this and also quicker racks up to a point are safer.

Lali, why are you asking all these technical questions, sounds like you are tucked away in shed building a bit of a monster.

What are you up to!!!!!
