is there an alternative recovery service?

peanut

Active member
just looking to renew with the AA and find that the services and prices of the AA and RAC are practicaly identical. No loyalty concession or discount for having my vehicle insured though them either.
I was wondering if there is a viable alternative. Almost 95% of my travel would be below a line drawn between Stroud and North London.
Any suggestions ?

Don't know if its just me but I'd stick with the AA. I think I'm right in saying they're the only breakdown firm that use their own vehicles. Any other breakdown service may pass your breakdown on to a local garage for recovery which can't be good.

My parents use their Tesco points for RAC membership and it is much much cheaper - something like £40 of vouchers for full homestart/relay memebership.
Well worth a look if the other half shops there (not that I'm being sexist or anything...)

Just renewed my ADAC cover for €79

Covers you for the whole of Europe and they send the AA out to you in the UK

AA are very good at going the bit extra for you if you're a long-standing member. Not sure that's a phrase we can allow,though.....[&:]

I've had home-start without paying for it, and whilst waiting for Relay on a bank holiday got a lift from the patrol to get the family some food. I've heard several of these stories from friends as well. Possibly worth the extra if it makes the slightest difference, as when you're stuck at the side of the road the little things do count.

I've had to use the AA service on a number of occasions in the last couple of years (not just for the Porsche) and although they also use local garages if they are busy the service has always been very good. For the last two years when my renewal has come through I have rung them and mentioned the length of time I have been with them and that I may be thinking of looking elsewhere and have been offered substantial discounts on both occasions so it's definately worth doing!

ADAC - they will recover you from the 'ring - no-one else will [;)]. I joined up just for their european cover

You also get discounted ring tickets

It's not all that easy to join, but I may ditch the AA completely if it works OK

I joined them 2 years ago when the AA became prohibitive. Had to call them once with a flat battery, AA man arrived and got the car started - no problem.

Always managed to get someone English speaking on the phone, pay by credit card. Only issue is with the documentation in German, but who ever reads the manual [:D]

Did not know about the discounted Ring tickets - I'll ask about that

I believe it just applies to 8 lap or more tickets bought from the museum - not so easy at the moment as it's been flattened [;)]

Thanks for the AA info Paul - I think our renewal has just come through

We've used Brittania Rescue for years - we do get a discount however as my father was a Civil Servant. I've always been satisfied with them, and since I ran some right old sheds when I was at Uni... have used them many times!

There is also Direct Line ~ never used them though.

I've also used Brittania Rescue for years mainly because they use local garages. My thinking is that with our old cars the AA and RAC mostly don't have a chance at fixing it roadside so I want the quickest recovery service available. I've heard so many horrors about waiting hours for the two major places yet the two times I have needed recovery from Brittania they have been with me within 30 minutes. [:)]

I've always used the AA and get free home start amongst other benefits for my loyalty which is why I've stayed with them.
I have had a few problems with them over the years, including being forgotten about after their system crashed and there have been a few 3 hour waits but overall they've always been able to help. The call centre is a little frustrating, when I've had transmission problems I've asked for a low loader suitable for lowered cars and they invariably send the wrong vehicle. However they redeemed themselves when I had my balljoint failure at Brands (although again they sent the wrong vehicle first), I upgraded to Relay on the day and they picked me up within Brands itself and took me home well over the standard mileage allowance without extra charge.
I hadn't noticed a PCGB discount was available [:)] so I must make use of that come renewal time, thanks Paul.
