Is this 997 a good buy?

I've finally decided to sell my Boxster S and make the move to a 911 (997). I have been offered a 911 Carrera 2S October 2005 from a private seller that I know, the trouble is the vehicle has only done 12,000 miles and hardly turned a wheel in the past year,and not many miles in the year before that, although it has been garaged. I've had a short test drive and it drives fine, but I can see evidence of rust on the brake discs and it may be that there are other components and bits and pieces that a lay-off hasn't done any good to. It's a manual with a high spec - PCM/cruise control/Bose/6CD/Sports exhaust/Sun roof/rear wiper/electric seats/sport shifter/multi-function steering wheel/tyre pressure monitoring/park assist etc. The vehicle looks in very good condition apart from one wheel lightly kerbed.
The price looks ok to me at £29,250 so my questions are - should I even consider a vehicle that has hardly been run and if I do, how does the price look?
 
wow that is really low miles for a 7 year old car isn't it?

you might find that the discs and pads have glazed over with having been sat for so long. I had my old C2 skimmed at an OPC for about £250 all in (didn't need new pads) and the discs had glazed, so not too bad there. I would say it's just the perishable items that you'd need to take care with - rubber hoses etc. Best to get an independent check done or get an OPC to do one; that's the only way to be sure everything else is hunky dory I'd have thought.

Someone like Exel Wheels will charge you about £100-120 to fix the kerbed wheel, no big deal.

Otherwise, seems like good spec; I'd have said the price was a bit on the high side but not by much.
 
That really is low mileage, I would scrutinise the history thoroughly, check the history, not just service book but receipts to show its been looked after also to verify that extremely low mileage. You can get this model motor cheaper but not with that mileage.
 
Thanks for your comments, everybody. Very helpful. The mileage is genuine. It was supplied new by an OPC, resold after one year by an OPC and they have verified that it is correct, also a confirmed and stamped OPC service history. The seller and car are known to me and I do know that it has spent most of its time garaged and unused. The seller basically bought the car as a weekend runner and never got round to using it. So I'm not worried about whether the mileage is genuine, more about whether buying such a sophisticated car with hardly any running in the last two years is a good idea, and if the price supports that. Can buy a Porsche warranty but need to have owned the vehicle for 90 days. Based on all of this, any more comments on the price? 2005 model with a high spec and ultra-low mileage.
 
I would say thats a real bargain at that mileage and spce.

Get the current owner to put on the Porsche warranty and then pay him for it. That way you wont have to wait 3 months and you will have piece of mind.
 
Or even say you will have it if the warranty is included in the price.

I have just bought a gen 1 turbo with 7k on the clock, i did see another with half that on it. So there is a few around with low milage
 
Thanks for all the advice, I have now bought the car. I just need some insurance advice. My current insurer has wacked up the price for the Carrera S compared to my Boxster S. Premium has gone up from £363 to £675. Anybody recommend a good insurer? - with or without a Porsche Club discount.
 
Insurance seems to change all the time - Aviva were good for me last year as a new customer, but it worked out better this year to take an Admiral multi car policy for both our cars, even though aviva was slightly cheaper.

I've used Adrian Flux in the past and would recommend, sometimes their pricing is good, sometimes not - it will all depend on your circumstances

yep, Flux were the cheapest for me on the turbo this year, but they were out by a country mile on my C2 last year. Admiral were pretty close so worth a look also.
 
Aviva pretty much halved my insurance renewal costs this year as a new customer..
Next year may be a different story as an existing customer! [&:]

Working in insurance, it all depends on where you live, age etc.

I have always shopped around and two companies I have used which did me a great deal, were Sky Insurance & Competition Car Insurance.

I've just renewed my insurance with AON private clients who are very competitive and I've been with them for 3 years, I got a great deal on my Turbo S, insured for pretty much the same as Caroline's MX5. They are very helpful and will give you a porsche club discount. I was told about them by Clive and have been very pleased if you want to contact them let me know.

Porsche Insurance sounds expensive but saved me a bundle this year. Marsh Private Clients run the service using Aviva.
 
+1 for Porsche insurance. Find a realistic price you want to pay, and they always seem to beat it. Excellent service.
 
Another one for Porsche insurance - you also get two track days insurance for "free" in the quoted price
 
Thanks to all who responded. I finally went with Porsche Insurance using Marsh. They weren't the cheapest but the excess was ok (£430) and they only repair at official Porsche repairers. The other one I liked who were very reasonable ŵere Aviva multicar insurance.
 
Just to add that the people I spoke to were professional and helpful and they responded promptly. On one occasion they were busy but promised to call me back and did so within half an hour. I tend to go for cheapest on our other car (CR-V) but for a Porsche I don't think that cheapest is necessarily the way to go. I could have saved £100 but on balance Porsche Insurance gave me what I wanted.
