Is this a breather?

Finally got around to taking the righthand induction stuff off at the weekend to investigate an oil leak around the oil pressure/temp sender. Having read Steve's bog about the O ring I was hoping it might be that too. O-ring all fine.....

I cleaned everything up the best I could and put it all back together. Ran the car for a few minutes and checked for signs of oil. Have not taken it apart again yet but it looks like it might be coming from the black rubber pipe with the jubilee clip.

Would I be right to think this was the engine block breather? The oil sensors normally sit where the paper towell is covering the hole in the foreground.

One of the many breather pipe I had replaced during the re-build. They go very hard over time so just trying to pinch up the hose clamps doesn't work. Best to replace.

I think you're correct in that according to page 89 of the Engine section of the 964 manual I have in pdf format, the housing on which the hose is attached is called a ventilation housing.

If it's leaking it can only be from a perished hose, mabe the jubilee clip has been over tightened and caused the end to split?
If it is indeed the engine breather then it would normally pass through some sort of filter/flame check before being allowed back into the inlet manifold through some control mechanism.
So if the filter is blocked or the control valve that allows the breather gasses back into the inlet manifold isn't opening then pressure can build up and cause oil to leak.

Thanks guys..............

Will stip the induction pipes off again and take a closer look. I was hoping it was just a breather as that means it should not be too complicated to swap for new!

Just be prepared to be shocked at how much a piece of rubber pipe for a 964 is [:D]

p.s. are you coming to Donington? [;)]

I was 'shocked' for £180ish by an oil pipe in the wheel arch last service......fun, fun fun!

Had every intention of doing Donnington, but when the date came out I had to reign in my enthusiasm. The first 2 weeks of July have been ear-marked for a holiday. My wife now works in education and when she can take holiday is rather less flexible than previous.

If by chance we don't go away, then I will do my best to get there, even if it's sold out. Just can't risk booking while there is a doubt.

Ade, in case you haven't noticed it was moved to the 24th a while ago...would be good to see you if you can make it [:)]

As I posted I think its the breather return pipe, to the tank may have a restrictor in the pipe or oil tank. should be easy to change. Berny.

Not been on here much lately, so hadn't noticed............will check diaries etc but that is looking much more positive!

Stripped induction off again this afternoon to get to this pipe. Removed with no problem. It is very brittle so I'm hoping that the seal onto the crankcase house was just poor and that's the source of the leak.

Appears to be just a regular pipe but moulded into shape. Checked the part no on design911 and is about £15. Will pop into my local OPC on Monday to check with them.....

Well...........I replaced the pipe with nice new one from the OPC. Made sure that area was as clean as possible and nipped up any other bolts/nuts/clamps I could get to for good measure while I was in there. Ran the car up and all looked fine. Lack of MOT prevented a proper test.

Car is now MOt'd and has been out for a couple of decent runs. That area of the engine is still clean and dry. Well pleased. 'Just' need to take the undertray off and clean everything up underneath now to see if I can find any more leaks to address!

Thanks for the guidance earlier on...........
