Is this a replacement washer pump?

I have a mysterious pump that looks very aftermarket screwed to the top of my washer bottle. Am I right in thinking that this is an aftermarket part? If it is then is there any reason why a previous owner wouldn't have just replaced the original pump with a correct Porsche part? Are they expecially tricky to fit perhaps?

Cheers

I've never seen an arrangement like that before so I would say it is an aftermarket setup.

Genuine pumps are not especially expensive, though they are a bit tricky to get to. Look down behind the popup headlamp when it is up and you will see two cylindrical pumps recessed into the washer bottle. One is for the windscreen, the other is for the headlamp washers.

I doubt it. Having a heated pump is not going to be of much use when the water in the reservoir has iced up. I'd agree with Paul that it is most likely becasuse getting to the original pump is very difficult - unless you have an early 944 where the pumps were mounted on the top anyway!! One of the few things where Porsche seemed to take a back step.

Well being the sort of guy I am I'll attempt to swap it out for a genuine pump, as this one doesn't do too good a job of spraying the window anyway, hence the investigation.

It amazes me that any previous owner would have done this sort of "fix". I had stupidly assumed that any previous owner of a once £35-40k car would at least have a passing interest in not just papering over the cracks. Still, it's all satisfying stuff for me at least.

And therein lies the problem ... when a once-expensive car passes into the sub-£5k territory, a whole load of people who wouldn't fit the original owners demographic get their hands on it, and maintenance takes a corresponding nose-dive.

(I'll admit to having contemplated similar things before, and am contemplating something similar now with regards to the interior clock.)

Make sure your screen wash jets and the hoses/connectors etc, are not blocked first. Could be a simple fix.

Strangely enough I have an identical one fitted to my 944 Lux. I think it was supplied as a "manufacturers equivalent" as I bought a similar one from the Porscheshop recently. They quoted me about £39 for the genuine article (+vat,+carriage). The one I've got works fine but doesn't fit the original mounting lugs on the tank. I got over this by fixing it to the original bracket which then clips on to the tank.

I did once see a boost gauge replacement for the clock. As the clock is a bit redundant with stereo, satnav, phone, watch etc there must be a better use for the hole?

Outside temp gauge, i-pod display, second speed readout to frighten the passenger? [8|]

I'd be interested in the photos of the boost gauge replacement - not because I have boost (S2), but because I'd be interested in any gauges which are small enough to fit behind that space ... the standard size gauge everyone sells is 52mm diameter, and there is enough space there for a 45mm diameter unit ...

I am considering clocks from other cars - E36BMW's have a small clock which may fit in there OK. I'd need to make the clock face look 944-esque tho' (red hands, red numbers in the right font).

Agree about the fact that it is not 100% necessary, but I need something in that space!
