Is this RMS?

Hi All,

I've just noticed a puddle of oil? under the car, it is dead centre and just infront of the back wheels. The puddle is about 3 inches or so in diameter, I have only just noticed it but that could be because the drive has been wet for the last few weeks. Anyway I put a piece of paper under car last night and this morning there was a drop about an inch or so.

Is this likely to be RMS failure and how serious. I cant get to the garage til end of the week and have to do a few hundred miles in the car in the next couple of days. Will I be OK to drive it?

Sorry to post again on this issue but this does seem to be worse than a seeping which you i could just leave.

Sounds like RMS, as it is in exactly the place you would expect drips. I haven't had the experience myself, and the current trend is to ignore a small weep until the clutch needs changing, but a one inch 'puddle' overnight would seem a bit more than I would like to see. Anyone who has had the problem like to comment about the size of the drip?
 
Yes my thoughts exactly, hope someone can reassure me that its OK to use it and will not cause anymore damage.

Sorry to hear about this; you just recently bought this from an OPC didn't you (reading your previous posts)? I would get them to sort it out straight away and offer you a courtesy car which you can use to add a few hundred miles [;)]

As mentioned by Richard a lot of people live with RMS leaks and get them changed when the clutch is being changed. There is no point in us making recommendations as since it is covered you should get it changed ASAP.
 
Its not from an OPC but an independent, this is covered but I cant get to him til Wed and I need to be in South Wales tommorrow for work (300 miles round trip). I'll just have to take a risk, even if it gets worse its still covered by his warrenty at the end of the day.
 
Check the oil level (with the dip-stick in the rear boot if a 986!).

Normally RMS "leaks" do not even register as a loss of oil on the dipstick. In that case then the car will be fine.
If it has lost a lot then I'd be worrying about driving it...

It might seem obvious, but check the oil level on the gauge before you start the trip (engine cold, on level ground). Check it again before you start back (engine cold, level ground). One bar on the gauge is 0.25 litres, and that would make a BIG puddle. You need to check the level under the same conditions to know if the leak is significant or not.

Thanks for advice, I've checked oil level on gauge and its full. Will have a look with dipstick leter. By the way does anyone have trouble getting the rediculously long dip stick back in?
 
Think yourself lucky, the latest models from Porsche don't get one at all! I'm still not sure how you can verify if the electronic gauge is even accurate. A question I must ask the OPC.
 
I had a Cayman S demo car for a couple of days a few weeks ago - it left 2 spots of oil on the drive. I estimate roughly either side of dead centre to the longitudinal axis, ahead of the rear axle line. What might that be then...?
 
My 987s is in as we speak for an oil leak. I woke up Saturday to find a small puddle of oil about centre between rear wheels and about 6cm in diametre. It is also in for new shock absorbers due to a knocking sound at the rear (sounds like back box banging on the underside). I have a picture and will try and upload tommorow.
