Its a shocker

My inde inspected the car for MOT today and found that the front OS shock was weeping and suggested changing both.

I'm presuming the current shocks are original (65,000m).

I'd be interested to hear opinions from those who have replaced the shocks and which brands were selected? Be good to know the costs you paid to guage what to expect.

At 65k you should consider replacing all 4 shocks as the Monroe's will all be tired by now. I replaced all 4 on my 993C2s with Koni FSD's which were a great improvement on the Monroe, but bear in mind that when the suspension is stripped down it would be wise to check bushes & bearings etc as the geometry will need to be set up afterwards. I replaced bottom balljoints, inner track rods & top mounts - car drives so much better. Depends on how long you intend keeping the car & of course what budget!
 
I took my Monroes to 125k. Ken Coad was stunned. I didn't realise that, whilst they passed MOT, they were very very tired - apparently Monroes are 'finished' at 40k. Replace all 4 and definitely upgrade. Went with Ken's recommendation of KW Variant 3. Not sorry. It cost £2k incl setting up geometry etc and VAT. Remarkable difference. The way I can throw the car around now is nothing short of brilliant.

Hi, At the 993 tuning tips day held at Porsche shop in Sept/Oct 2010, KW variant 3s, where recommended by the expert speakers as being not only better than Bilsteins, but cheaper too. I managed to get hold of a set of v nearly new second hand ones, which I had fitted along with new control arms on the rear and then the cars alignment set up. What a difference from the original sports suspension, with tri rate springing instead of dual rate, gone was the old harsh ride at slow speed before working at high speed, the KWs work right across the range ! On Scottish roads as a member of R1 chasing the secretary in his GT3 they are invaluable ![;)] Regards Mike
