It's dropped orf!!

Well, I was driving along innocently today when I heard a clattering under the car, like I'd run over something - saw a bit of rusty metal in the rear view mirror, but assumed it had been there before I came along. Wrong! Drove on a bit further, and the cover to my fuel tank and fuel pump dropped off and dragged behind. :s Managed to unplug the clip holding the cover onto the wire (I assume the fuel level sensor wiring?) and drove on as normal. Now, the tank and fuel pump and everything there look OK, so I assume it's OK to drive the car like this for a few days before taking it to the garage? Also, when I get it to the garage, is it just a matter of bolting a new metal strap over the cover and putting it all back into place? (I looked at the strap and it was rusted through nearish to the middle, so I hope the mounting points are still intact...)

Cheers,

Giles

The very same thing afflicted Mr McN in his Lux, am sure he will be along presently to advise either way..

Be aware that there are two types of strap. RPM fitted me a lovely used one, and kept the newly powder-coated one they'd got ready for me. [&:]

It was a pig to get back together, but on a ramp it'll be easier. I was worried about anything getting thrown up and hitting the fuel pump, but I drove it the 20-odd miles home and then up to the garage to fit the new strap.

I recommend people spray the straps with a corrosion inhibitor at the same time as the fuel lines every service. Mine looked fine outside, lovely layer of paint held the dusty remains in very well. []

Just to add, Suffolk neglected to mention he was right behind me when mine fell of, in his new Turbo. He was more surprised than me....[:D]

Thanks Paul and Jon

Sounds like it's not too horrible a job, I'll see if my indie can squeeze me in before next weekend's trip to Kent.

It was fortunate that the rest of the Turbo convoy (or snow ploughs as it turned out on the day....) were sufficiently far in front at the time....

It was certainly a interesting moment to experience while slithering along the M25 on track tyres [8|]
