It's that time of year....

Time to prep the Cayman for (hopefully) better weather.

MOT done via RPM North Yorkshire - straight through with no advisories (again).

I have done a number of bits of work in the run up to this post in preparation for the next service. This has included plugs, coil packs, exhaust bolts, brake pads all round, cabin filter, air filter and a few other bits. Yesterday saw the remaining jobs prior to the car going back into RPM for it's service and book stamp. It's strange how some of the jobs seem an awful lot easier than you expect and yet the simple one's remain mind numbingly difficult.....

Power steering fluid change - dead easy, very little mess and nice clean fluid again - 40 mins worth of work.

Brake fluid change - even easier, used single person bleed kit and no need to remove wheels, again no mess and nice firm pedal - 30 mins of easy work.

AOS (you were right Richard) not that easy - took 10 minutes to remove the old one and about an hour to fit the new one!. The issue was the spring clips on the underside of the AOS housing that retain the drain hose. Managed in the end with some angled surgical forceps!. I had intended to replace the corrugated hose that runs across the top of the engine to the AOS but gave up in the end (only precautionary) since Porsche have built the inlet manifold and throttle body on top of a small retaining clip that proved impossible to get to without removing the aforementioned items. Leave for the day it NEEDS replacing methinks.

For me, it is nice to have a good independent specialist that I have confidence in & who is happy to work with you and do the stuff you ask for rather than the 'fixed price' approach.

Roll on sunshine..................

I know what you mean about leaving it until it needs doing, I changed the waterpump and thermostat last week, not a simple job lying on your back. Put it all back together, filled it, ran it up to temp and switched off. Then I find a big puddle under the car, finally traced it down to the new waterpump!! Stripped it all down again and put the old one back on..

Frustrating to say the least!. Final bit of work for me today before the car goes into RPM next week - gearbox oil was the final outstanding job. This requires the removal of the 2 aluminium braces and the pressed alloy gearbox cover plate - touch tight without a lift ramp but managed it eventually. Oil drained off - I sat a small camping stove on low underneath to warm the gearbox and oil (before anybody asks I had an extinguisher to hand, there was a good foot of clearance and I stayed with the car!). Oil drained off easily in about half an hour. I had decided to use Millers Oils CRX LS 75w-90 NT Competition full synthetic transmission oil. Took a shade shy of 3 litres. All told it took about 2 hours. Time for a beer!.

Well done chaps - good to see that there are some Cayman owners both capable and willing to do some work on their cars. Keep it up..! Jeff
