For the last couple of years I've left the car connected up to one these Accumate smart battery chargers. With the car only seeing w/e use it sounded (and was, I think) the best insurance for achieving the best battery life.
Last w/e the car was so slow to turn over I thought I'd forgotten to to switch the Accumate on - no, it was on but the chargers lights were indicating that battery was still charging.
A quick look at the electrolyte level...nothing, just dry plates. It took 1.5 ltrs of water to restore the levels. There are no splits in the battery casing - so, it's not leakage.
A. overnight charge seemed to restore somet power but very short lived. This was the second Porsche battery the car has seen. The original failed last February after 5 years . Our local OPC gave Mrs J-i-a-B a replacement for nothing - not new, but used which was decent of them!
TBH, I've never bothered checking the electrolyte levels (seems a little antiquated in age of sealed batteries) and without checking the service schedule, I'm not certain if this is an OPC check item?
Trying to work out if it was a fault in the battery that caused a continual overcharge with Accumate - it's a low output device anyway.
Or if the cars charging system is defective - certainly a small increase in battery voltage to around 14.5v (measured on the now new battery) when the car is running, so something is happening.
Any thoughts?
With a friendly contact in the motor parts trade I managed to pick up a Lucas sealed for life, 4year warranty battery for the wallet crippling sum of £44.03p. Larger capacity than the standard Porsche fit battery too (105Ah v 80Ah)
Same height and width but around 40mm longer - simply had to relocate the battery clamp securing bolt; there is a drain hole in the battery tray which was positioned perfectly and that was it.
No placebo effect! - The car has lost its slightl hunt at idle, the pick up is much more rapid and the remote opening of the luggage compartments has now mysteriously started to work!
Can't help but wonder if the tired battery had some affect on the engine management...cheapest "tune up" I've ever invested in[
