This week, among other jobs, I've been changing my VitesseMAF from a stealth MAF (using the standard airbox) to one just using a K&N filter behind the headlight. It's a very tight fit in there.

I've just taken it out for a spin, with the roof out, and it has changed the character of the car completely! - you can hear the turbo spin up & the dump valve go when you change gears. i'm not entirely sure it's a good thing, but I have always wanted a bit more drama in the sound department [:D]

oh yes - it feels like it's pulling a bit harder as well - really spooling up quickly & shoving you back in the seat [:D][:D]

No pics yet - there's a bit of "temporary" pipework that needs tidying, and the engine bay is pretty filthy (and likely to stay that way...)
 
It's funny but that's one of the things I'd like to change on my car. I hate those noises being so noticable through my MAF and K&N and would dearly love to be able to fit a stealth one through the standard airbox that still used a wide enough pipe not to be restrictive.

In the meantime I just turn the radio up [:D]
 
Paul, if you don't mind cutting the Vitesse J-pipe then it's easy to make the Vitesse MAF work with the airbox.
It won't breath quite as freely as with a cone but if you run the airbox without the snorkel it should not be too far, all without the annoying noises.
If you consider having a weekend on the continent then I know someone not far from me who could do this for you in an afternoon and that would allow me to do some technical espionage on your car [8D]
 
He definitely was an accident waiting to happen, but to be fair to him he wasn't putting anyone else in danger. And in anycase he actually wasn't going that fast, he just looked like he was having fun, driving the car right upto its limits and a little bit beyond occasionally. In fact there was an Evo and a Scooby out that day who were far more dangerous as they were going fast and clearly on the limits of the drivers skills rather than the cars capabilities. In fact the Evo had a couple of big off's. EDIT: oops, clearly in response to the other GT3 thread!

Regarding the airbox, if you want to retain it how about fitting the cone filter inside the airbox (or even a cylindrical filter to increase surface area) and modding the snorkel? I like the snorkel as it drawers in cool air from outside the engine bay. With a cone filter inside the engine bay you cannot avoid drawing in hot engine bay air. Or even you could blank off the slot the snorkel attaches to and drill some large holes in the lid of the airbox and hook them upto a couple of NACA ducts at the leading edge of the bonnet 968 turbo style.
 
I know that Im coming at this half-arsed: but had you considered fabricating a heat shield to isolate the air filter from the hot air in the engine bay? Aluminium sheet is extremely cheap and it should be relatively easy to bend and rivet if you prototype it in cardboard (cereal packets are excellent for this) first...

there's a rennlist thread at the moment where someone is opening up a snorkel to 3" - I think to go with the MAF he has concealed in the AFM! Thom also posted some pics of a wider snorkel.

The Vitesse MAF puts the filter right over the hole in the n/s wing where the snorkel gets air from, so should be pretty good. I have seen some people fence off that part of the engine bay - lindsey do a "MAF trap" afaik (but it doesn't fit too well I believe). It's going to be a lot better than sticking a cone in place of the airbox, right behind the rad.
