Well yesterday I picked up my first Boxster, a 2000 2.7 tip s with 47K dark blue metallic with savana leather. I'm not entirely new to porsche, I had a 944 some years ago but this is somthing else, I'm loving driving it. Just got to get through that 'what's that noise phase' (paranoia obtained from years of driving 70'sand 80's cars and having some mechanical knowledge) Got a few questions, the ring pull thing above drivers door hinge that just came away in my hand, (burk I pulled too hard) what is it? I'm guessing emergency petrol cap release! am I likely to need it? Second, I've driven two now do they all have that distictive starter note! can't describe it, but it doesn't soung like my old Beemer, finally, there is a slight oil dampness on one of the air intakes under the car, RMS right? not dripping or coating anything else, do I just forget about it? Thanks in advance.

1. Emergency petrol cap release is what it was...
2. I don't know what you mean?
3. Probably RMS. If the car has a full Porsche Service history, or if you have the extended warranty, it might be worth getting Porsche to fix it. Some appear to be doing them under "goodwill" for cars up to about your model year. You might be out of luck though.
If not, then unless you actually notice it dripping, or you have to top up, then it's not worth getting it done ... I was going to say until the clutch is done - but just remembered yours is an auto![;)] Well, not until you have to then!

Congratulations on the purchase![8D]

All the ones I looked at made 'that noise' when starting and the one I bought does. I can only best describe it as sounding like something fell off and rattles at the point the engine catches. If it doesn't happen on all of them it certainly happens on a lot of them.

Check the tightness of the oxygen sensors in the exhaust - just this morning tightened the two LH ones, having had the RH ones done a few weeks ago. Noticable on start up and at other resonance frequencies (engine revs) if this is the cause.

Thanks, but I beginning to feel this is a normal porsche noise, it's just that the starter makes a more rasping sound than I'm used to, it's just me being paranoid.

The noise on start up is the hydrallic tappets pressurising (or similar) I thought. It seems to be normal particularly if you havent run the car for a while.
