I've got an RMS leak on my 2006 997S

Hey guys,

My car was in the local OPC on Thursday for some unrelated issues when they discovered that it has an RMS leak. Apparently it is scale 2 out of 5 (with 5 being the worst) and is misting/weeping a little but as my warranty expires in March they are going to fix it next week.

I just wanted to know if there was any chance of damage to the engine that may have been caused by this leak (I've topped up the oil a few times since I got the car and have used about 1/2 litre in 5 months but have never seen the low oil warning light up).

Also when the engine is stripped down to replace the part will they be able to check for cylinder scoring issues on 5 and 6 as from what I gather this means imminent engine failure? I will be asking them to go to town and replace everything that they are able to do so under warranty as I will not be renewing it.

RMS issues on the 997 live on (even in an 06 reg car which should have had the newer better seal than earlier 997's).

Does anyone know how much it would have cost to repair out of warranty by the way?
 
Very little chance of damage due to the small oil weep. My understanding is that they remove the gearbox to replace the RMS so it might be worth seeing if the clutch needs replacing at the same time.
This doesn't involve stripping the engine down (and removing the heads) as such so to check for cylinder scoring they would need to use a boroscope.
I think the RMS replacement (manual car) alone would be a about £350 at an Indie but add a bit for a PC!
Good timing to get it done just before end of warranty!
 
To the best of my knowledge there is no danger of any damage to the engine from a RMS leak unless the oil level gets very low which is unlikely because the seal usually only weeps. In theory it is possible for the clutch plate to become contaminated but that very rarely seems to happen. It is worth getting them to check your clutch whilst they are doing the work because you would only have to pay for the parts rather than any additional labour if it is showing considerable wear. The cost of replacing a RMS is about £1,000.

They do not have to strip the engine to change the seal, assuming you have a manual not tiptronic, they drop the gearbox and do not have to touch the engine.

 
Cheers for the advice guys, as it happens the car had a new clutch approx 6k miles ago so it shouldn't need changing. The clutch was changed by the previous owner and it's a bit baffling as to why they didn't just replace the RMS then. It's probably for the best though as apparently if the RMS has already been replaced under warranty previously then Porsche will not replace it again for free.

I will be getting a major service done at the same time as the RMS as it is due anyway - as the warranty is expiring are there any key problem areas I should ask my service contact to pay special attention to incase they need replacing under warranty or do they tend to find things themselves?

That's not true. Some folk have had at least three RMS replacements all covered by the warranty.
