I've picked up my Miami Blue 718 Cayman

Hi all,

After 37 weeks and 2 days I've finally picked up my Miami Blue 718 Cayman.

I absolutely love it, and if I say so myself I think it looks absolutely stunning!! I love the combination of Miami Blue paint and the Carrera Sport wheels. And I went for the SportTex interior as I'm not a leather fan, and loving that too.

I've got my first Porsche Club GB event booked for August, TOTEM with the R8 region (Tour Of The East Midlands), really looking forward to that.

Here's a picture (can't see how to attach more than one).

Thanks,
Richard.

Looks spot-on! I bet it's a great experience collecting a new Porsche.

Interested to see a shot of the interior

I haven't got many pictures of the interior actually. Here's one I took the day it was delivered to the OPC.

It is a great experience, got a really nice presentation box which had one of the keys, a keyring and picture of the car in the showroom. Also got a really nice gift from the Selection range. Was nice seeing the car under the cover and being revealed by my salesman.

How do you find the overall feel of the sport-tex? I've ordered it but haven't seen it or sat in it as my OPC doesn't have any cars with a sport-tex interior.

I dont like leather or alcantara seats so that was never an option for me.

The sport-tex fabric is quite coarse but comfortable. And I think it looks good too, gives the seats some visual shape that I don't think leather does.

I also have an A3 S-line saloon and the fabric is very similar in feel, I suggest going to an Audi dealer and looking at that.

Your patience in waiting has been well rewarded, enjoy every moment of it.

Love those wheels, btw, had they been available when we ordered our 718 we'd have had the same

Yummy ..

I'll be interested to find out about Sport-tex.

I do like Alcantara .. but I have an RS3 with Napa Leather seats and they give me numb numb on a long journey ... they look lovely but they are a pain in the arse !

Richard,

How's your new car going?

I would advise you get the suspension geometry set up symmetrically after the initial settling-in period. I had mine done at 6k miles along with an engine oil and filter change. In my 9 years experience with several new Caymans the wheel alignment and camber settings are generally all skew-whiff on each corner. Much like a circus clown's comedy car in extreme cases.

In my other thread on this site you will see the precise settings I have chosen. The front strut top mounts have a slot adjustment for camber. There is not enough negative camber adjustment on the standard set-up available for motorsport guys like me, but at least you can dial-in the thick end of one and a quarter degrees of negative. This greatly improves steering feel and gives the car a more pointy feel. Less prominent understeer also.

Don't worry about the resulting settings showing red. Porsche always tune their front suspension settings for understeer, so deliberately limit the amount of recommended negative camber accordingly. Anyway, I would wager that your very first geo check print-out before adjustment will be showing red in at least one corner anyway.

Below I have a photo of the current front top mount slot setting on my car following my recent geo set-up.

Hi Brian,

I'm loving the car, though to be honest I haven't had much chance to use it. So far I've got 157 miles on the clock!!

At what mileage do you recommend getting the camber settings checked? It's unlikely I'll be using it as a track day toy so is it necessary?

I'm not mechanically minded at all, I understand what everything means but I've never had a car where it all matters, so I'm hoping to learn a lot from my 718 experience.

Richard.

Richard,

Camber and toe adjustments are best re-set after a new car has settled-in. There is no precise mileage, it all depends on the way the car is driven and the type of roads used. I had mine re-set at 6k miles, and 6 months from new.

Correct wheel alignment is crucial for steering feel, handling, and optimised tyre wear patterns. Regardless of whether the car is used on the track or not, well adjusted steering and suspension geo enhances driver enjoyment.

Brian
