J-Tube

Hi,

Should I be changing the j-tube while I am doing the cam chain.

Seems like the worlds most expensive 3" pipe.

Any way to test them?

Thanks

Ant

Seal up the holes and put 3-5 PSi into it. Check for leaks with soapy water if necessary. If it aint broken or shows no signs of perishing then don't fix it.

You should certainly be changing the plastic pads on the tensioner. I had read somewhere that the J-tube can fracture, so I changed mine (it wasn't expensive at the time). Hard to say if it was worth doing really... I've not actually heard an account of one failing and wrecking an engine and it seems like a robust part.

Yep I am changing both top and bottom pads but the j tubes are now £73 and on top of a massive bill already I wanted to check if its a necessity.

I will test the one that comes off as it isn't a part stocked by Porsche in the UK I imagine its not that common to change them.

Fingers crossed!!

I'd have thought that if the J-tube had fractured it would be fairly immediately obvious. I had a close look at mine when I changed the slipper pads and it looked OK, so I put it back on. However testing with some compressed air is a better idea, as Rob suggested.

Oli.
