Jacking and Axle Stands

I've seen all sorts of conflicting views on the Internet relating to where axle stands should be placed to support the car.
I take my wheels off occasionally to clean, apart from the fact that you shouldn't leave the car on a jack, it would be really useful to be able to take two off two wheels at once. I'm never sure where I should put axle stands to support the car.

Any advice would be appreciated.


 
Great question, I'm in the process of buying my first 996 and will want to do exactly the same for cleaning wheels and other maintenance. I'll try to suss it out when I get the car, but keen to hear what others do :). Regards, Jonathan
 
I brought that book a few months back, covers the topics in just enough detail and is well worth the money.

I dont have it too hand, but don't recall it having torque settings though which is a bit of a nuisance.

 
+1 for the Projects book; very good!

What it recommends is an expensive long-reach low jack and then you can put the axle stands on the jacking-points under the sills.


If you don't want to buy a £300+ jack (the one it recommends is branded Weber and is about £400 but there are Compaq equivalents for £300), I guess you could try jacking one side and putting the stand on the other? At the front, the bottom of the lower wishbones (near the hinge) look okay to me as well.

Or you could use ramps.......
 
I've just cleaned al the wheels and repainted around the discs. I only used a trolley jack to do the lot took about 1.5 hours. Was surprised that the alarm went off do to the car being jacked but will stop by the key. All looking superb now.
