jacking up car

Hi, can anyone tell me if you have to use jacking plates to jack the car up.
I have just purchased some new wheels and have asked a local mobile tyre fitter to change the tyres off my old wheels onto the new rims. like most tyre fitters they use a trolley jack, but read somewhere that used incorrectly it can damage the underside of the car and that jacking plates for that car make it safe.
The other option i suppose is to use the jack supplied with the car.
regards.

I just use a trolley jack on the jacking points with a thick pad of old Curtain to make the dish on the jack flat and accept the edge of the jacking point.

I use a trolley jack at the correct points and have piece of rubber car mat, cut to fit the jacks contact points and this works fine.

That's what I do.

Make sure they DO NOT use any other part of the car. The sills are not strong enough, and there are no points specified by Porsche other than the 4 jacking points.
If I'm jacking the car up I do place axle stands just under a couple of other points - where the suspension attaches etc, but this is for safety in case the jack fails - I'm not putting any pressure on those points as I leave a mm or so space.
