hi guys,

What is the best procedure for lifting the car to remove the engine & box. My jack lifts to 52cm is this high enough?. any advice appricated

Tim

I would think it will be hard work at that hight and you will need a good jack to balance and drop it down. Get a good jack and take care its a big lump! by the way you can just take the gearbox out on the 964 if that helps. regards Berny.

Hi Tim ,

So you have decided to take the engine out for a rebuild then ..last time we spoke you were not sure...

See the picture ...if you take the bumper off you need less height ..I left it on .

I used a large hydraulic table, a scissor hydraulic jack, a trolley jack and then a timber beam to give me the leverage and height. Make sure the front wheels are chocked.

Be carefully though its quite heavy !!!

Im doing a top end rebuild at the moment. I had the car almost level with torsion bars approx 800mm high, removed bumper because of engine bogi (made so the jack can slide from under it) also had jack under trans. Did it on my own all went smoothly, just take your time and have all the books to hand & take photos.

Ian, that picture of your dropped engine has prompted me to ask a question. Do you think it would be possible to lower the engine a small amount (not a complete drop) to enable the rear most heat shield (bumper side of the engine carrier) to be changed?

Good question .

I need to replace my one in time..when I buy a new shield at over £250!!!

Doing the metal door frames at the moment so these are all off ....

I think ..

1) Remover the rear exhaust box
2) Drop the rear of the engine on the two rear mounts
this should then give you access to the shield.....

But I have not done this yet ..... with the engine in .

Hi Ian,

Yep its comming out next week!!.

Been reading alot since we last spoke and I am now confident in being able to do this. I am going to send the heads out for new guides to be fitted and springs etc. The cams will be checked when i have stripped the engine. Going for a full top/bottom strip down. New shell bearings, piston rings, tensioners + some new tin also going to change the clutch. This will be my first engine rebuild ever but I am a mechanical engineer by trade so I am sure I can figure it all out. I am going to put the car in storage for the winter to free up garage space. Hoping to get it all done over the next 2 months.

I will keep you posted!!

Tim

forgot to say.

I am thinking of using 2 fork lift trucks to lift the car from the engine. I have been offered a space in a friends factory to remove the engine. He has two 7 tonne forklifts + ATV jack to rest the engine on before lifting the body.. Should be easy what do do think

Tim

If you get stuck drop me a line ..hopefully I can help .

PS: your need a cam regrind ..one lob allways drops off

Tim with 2 fork trucks it should be easy! have regard for H&S! if you have long tines on one truck. I use a 2 post lift when removing the engines and drop them down on a fork truck easy! good luck Berny.

No probs with H+S I have a fork lift licence and I will do it on the weekend when there will be only a couple of people about!. I am thinking 1 truck each side of the car to lift it up. Maybe use the small 1.5 ton truck in the rear of the car to lower the engine on to a pallet. I will see...

Lucky the guy is letting me use his stuff, Only asked him today and he was fine about it. Didnt really fancy getting the car jacked up that high using jacks but if i needed to.....
I will see how I go.

Tim
