Jammed fan.. but no where to be found ?

Hi
My 87 has started to have a noise of what i can only describe as a jammed electrical fan, coming from behind the dash.. but i can not work out what it is.
It only happens after you start the car (so not just with the ignition), but continues on for a good 30 seconds or so after you turn the ignition off..

I have checked all the fans I know of and what is found in the Bentley bible... Internal Temp sensor, both footwell fans, the cold air fan, and the AirCon Evaporator Fan.. but all these are functioning as expected and disconnecting them doesn't remove the noise...

So basically I am not stuck as to where to look next... Any ideas anyone ?

Thanks in advance
Adam.

Check that the vack pipe for the headlamp adjusters is not leaking
this could make a noise after switching off as it has a storage tank.

When I put my car back together I forgot to connect to the headlights to the vacuum back up and had a high pitched squeal

The screaming noise is often the cold air blower fan, try setting speed to off to check. If my memory serves me well there is also a wee little fan in the dash to feed the air temperature sensor, which I guess could also scream if the bearings have dried out.

I had a very similar problem, I could not work out where it was coming from for ages. The symptoms were exactly as you describe. In the end the guys at Northway checked it out and went straight to it - something to do with the oil pump from memory - I real to get to it you needed to flip the bonnet and it was at the rear by the windscreen/bulkhead. If this doesn't help I can trawl through the old emails and bills to confirm?

Thanks for some ideas.. I will have another check..
Cold Air fan I have already ruled out, by disconnecting it.

Vacuum pipes.. i dont think are the issue as the driver side has not been connected in the 12 years of owning the car, and the noise has only recently started... but what creates the vacuum.. is there some pump hidden away somewhere.. could this be the cause of the noise .?

As for Oil pump.. i am a little lost.. there isnt an oil pump in the vicinity, fuel pump maybe but these would prime with the ignition and i would expect stop when the ignition if off ?

thanks

If the vack pipe is not connected to the o/s headlamp you are losing vacuum.

The vacuum to power the headlamp adjusters comes from the brake servo vacuum
witch comes from the engine inlet manifold,

the oil pump is in the engine not in the front compartment

Unfortunately not.. still looking... first issue which has stumped me since getting the car in 2001.

sorry I mis-remembered, it was the fuel pump that was squealing for me. I checked the Invoice from Ray Northway. Hope that helps.
