Jan 99 - 996 Carrera 4 - About to buy?

Test drove the above today and loved it.
Felt good and exceeded my expectations.

A couple of questions I need some quick help with..........

1) There seems to be a rattle from the top of the instrument panel, Is this common? Or anything to be concerned with?
2) Its from an independent dealer (not a porsche specialist) and has a 6 mnth "Car Care" Warranty. Anyone heard of these?
3) It has a full service history stamped up to the current 33K, but no receipts included. Is this a major concern?
4) It will need a full inspection. Can anyone recommend someone in Oxon/Bucks

Thanks in advance
Regards
Rob

Sounds quite similar to mine. Is it RSJ Sportscars you're getting it from? Mine has a little buzzy rattle at the moment which only showed up after buying. My advice would be get it fixed beforehand if you can. I'd recommend you take it to Porsche Reading - they were excellent for me for the check for £125. FPSH without receipts is ok - you can always check it with the dealers on the stamps if you have any concerns.

Be aware that stamps in the book from an OPC don't mean that it has been fully serviced - they only mean it has been looked at by an OPC and an inspection/minimum service carried out. My 996 had a full set of stamps from JCT600 but they would not give me copies of invoices etc.

When Silverstone had it in a few weeks ago they pointed out that fluids etc had not been changed for some time as the previous owner had asked JCT to 'keep costs down'.

Thanks guys for the feedback.
GMackie, where abouts r u based?
I am quite close to Silverstone, so would love to come and have a look at your car etc.
With only limited knowledge of the marque , it would help having some no pressured time around one?

Is this feasable?

Melun,

Sorry I have been off the board for a while (away for a long weekend etc...)

I live in Milton Keynes and have an office between Deanshanger and Buckingham. Happy to meet up during the day (if I am there) or in the evening if you want to talk 996's (don't know much about owt else Porsche wise).

Also the R10 inter marque gathering is happening in Bedford on Saturday happy to meet up there..

Let me know via the board or private mail me through the forum

Have you seen June's edition of Porsche Post ? In it a member has just brought a brand new 996 that comes with a switchable Sports exhaust.
Does anyone know anything about this exhaust ?

I pick my new (to me) 996 Cab Tip up later this week. Any input on what tools the toolkit should have would be especially welcome. I am especially interetseted in knowing if it should have any unsual tools that may apply to a 996 Tip. My 964 Cab's toolkit had a tool for raising/lowering the hood if the power failed.

The switcable PSE is only an option at purchase. The PSE can be retrofit to any 996 but the switch takes about 7-8 hours of OPC labour and is usually deemed not cost effective for the benefit of quietening the best car noise in the world..

For an OPC to retro fit a PSE costs about £1350 (if you haggle) without the switch.

It is worth every penny. And, you still have the old system so you can change back if you ever sell the car.

Porsche Sports Exhaust System.

The main switch is attached to your right leg. There is another switch option that enables the sound to be 'muted' to standard, which, in this country, may be relevant for track day noise testing. However, in normal use, the system isn't all that noisy and simply provides a deeper, fruitier engine note, without being intrusive. Very addictive though.

Thanks, guys, for your input on the PSE system. I'll will obvoiusly only know if mine IS equipped with PSE when I get to compare it to another 996 without it (unless I can find the mystical switch that has been referred to ! ).
On the matter of my car being described by the dealer as an "S" model, he isn't referring to the registration letter, since the car is very much newre than that !
Steve.
