JMG Alpine Speaker upgrade

I did the upgrade on my 2004 986 using his mounting kit but I bought the speakers via eBay because they were cheaper. I also bought a TORX allen key set off eBay too to make it easier (possible?) to remove the original grille screws. I had to saw a lug off the new drivers to get them to fit in the mounting kit - which as a bit scary. But overall its a very worthwhile task and it makes the front pair of speakers far clearer.

Chris.

I upgraded the speaker on the Carrera using MB Quart speakers and didn't need to use an adaptor. The speakers come with a bracket and I used velcro around the edge and with the screws supplied it held fast.

Well the JMG speakers arrived nicely wrapped on Christmas Day, the Pioneer AVIC and double din cage await some decent weather so I can take the car out of the carcoon.
Was at Porscheshop today and have ordered a silver top dash surround to match centre console.
The IMS Guardian is also here, so I am looking forward to a massive dash strip down and rewiring!
Does everyone pull the fuses or disconnect batteries when stripping out the dash?
Has anyone fitted one of the underseat active subwoofers available from Kenwood KSC-SW11 or Pioneer TS-WX110A...fedback would be appreciated?

Depends what I'm doing. Almost impossible to short anything out if just swapping parts, as all the connectors are well insulated, but if I am making wiring changes I would definitely disconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to position 1 and switch off all the loads you can, before disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. It stops the alarm siren sounding.

Quick update...I now have four alpines installed, front two are mounted using the JMG adapters and the rear two have been fitted using the OEM speaker spiders which have been heavily modded with a dremel and then the alpines epoxied into the modded housings.
The results are breathtaking compared to the original paper cone speakers where any volume above half would cause painful to the ear distortion to high frequencies, the bass has a good thump now and the sound stage is much improved.
The OEM hardon amp is being used and is more than adequate to give very high sound levels.
Will report back when the pioneer AVIC head unit is fully installed and post some photos.
To summarise, if you are considering the speaker mod, just do it, I guarantee you will not be disappointed![;)]

Stuart has asked me to add a few photos of his speaker installation:

Nice job Stuart!

Thanks for adding pics and the compliments Richard!
Some words of explanation to the pics:

First picture shows the torx bit in a small ratchet spanner used to remove the front speaker units.

Picture 2 shows the finished modified Alpine speaker installed in the OEM speaker baskets that can be seen in Photo 3. The OEM Nokia unit is shown as comparison on the right.
These modded OEM speaker baskets with the Alpines bonded in place require only an additional jumper wires (visiblke in the pic) to be soldered from the OEM speaker socket to the speakers and have been used in the rear side panels.

Picture 4 shows the Alpine fitted using the JMG adapter ring, the kit comes with correct cables and plugs to use the OEM speaker plugs and was installed in the front before I discovered I could use the original speaker basket and modify with a dremel to accept the Alpines....

All in all , a very happy bunny with the Upgrade and with the addition of the extremely capable Pioneer AVIC HD1BT Double Din head unit, the sound quality in the car has been transformed.

The additional functionality includes integral Tom Tom Satnav, Bluetooth Phone connectivity, Ipod connection, Hard Disc Music Library, Voice activation, rear reversing camera, DVD and CD player as well as looking great in my opinion?!?
I will be adding a photo of the car as a splash screen and background in the near future.
