John Lyon Driving Courses

Evo magazine bought a 993 recently and sent one of their junior writers off on a JL course. A couple of issues back. Seemed very impressed and JL clearly has a long association with the original 911 and all the more recent models. Try the Evo website for an article or let me have your address and I will see if I can dig out and copy the article for you.

I did the high performance course (2 days) with John 5 yrs ago (gosh, doesn't time fly...)

It was very interesting, and great fun. It took in lots of road driving and a session at Millbrook on the high speed bowl (saw 160 out of my XKR!), the Alpine circuit (just lovely) and a smaller 'handling' circuit that all really helped me to gain confidence and knowledge of the feel of the car on the limit. There was also a session on the wet slidey area at MIRA, again a real education.

John is a remarkably skilled driver, and his demonstration drives are most enlightening. It is quite intense- John doesn't like it when you go into 'cruise' mode.

Well worth it.

Robert.

I did the one day course about 2 years ago with John Lyon.... He is very very inpressive... well worth the money!

I'd second both of the above posts. I go back to John each year for a day's tuition as it is so instructive and good fun. His demonstration drive of your own car is very revealing. He is very fast, extremely smooth and very safe. Your car (when driven by him!) will feel like it has just one big gear and is being consistently dragged along by a sci-fi style 'tractor beam'. At the end of the day I'm always a bit embarrassed as to how poor my driving was at the start of the day as well as a bit shattered from the level of concentration required.

John is thought by some to be a bit 'old school'. I don't mind at all, but some folk on the Pistonheads Porker Forum seem to have a slight problem with this.

In short highly recommended. As they say, if you want to go faster spend some money on the nut behind the wheel and not on the car.

Sort of agree and also disagree with the comments made above. I did the course with John a few years ago using a 930 - learned a lot, enjoyed the car handling and driving skills bit - did not enjoy, or comply, with being instructed to drive at 100mph+ down the Foss Way simply because " it's OK I know the road and there won't be any cops about because it is not a national road". He may have changed his style since then but.......It's not his licence on the line.

Personal view and I stress the instruction bits were excellent.
