John's Indiana Red 924 project

Guys
I have just bought this car from a fellow 924 enthusiast. Thought that as it's a new project, I should start a thread detailing progress. My mate hasn't had it too long, but has got it running well and fixed the brakes for me. He delivered it yesterday in the dark-I reckon he didn't want me to see what a heap it is ! [:D]

It's a 1979 car in rare Indiana Red metallic. Black trim with herringbone centre panels to the seats. It has two spoke steering wheel, external fuel filler, different gauges etc unique to the pre-1980 cars. It has also been fitted in the past with a "love it or hate it" period accessory Zender rear spoiler. Other than this, it is standard.

Condition wise, the car is almost rust free-a few bits on the front wings only. Only one tiny dent and no accident damage-all in all a nice straight car. It has been repainted (Badly) in the past and the paintwork is in terrible condition-the photos are deceptive! It's flaking off in places, crazed and faded. Fortunately, the engine bay and door shuts are fine.

Interior-is filthy! [:D] Not too much damage-the drivers seat has some splits but on the whole it's not too bad at all. Some splits in the headliner and the rear 1/4 panels are quite badly warped. No leaks inside, which is a very positive thing!

Mechanics-well, I don't know yet! The battery gave out and is on charge so I haven't heard it run yet, but my mate assures me it runs and drives very well-it certainly has had a fair bit of money spent on the mechanics in recent years. It will be running tomorrow. [8D]

Electrics-Roger the bodger has been here, just as he has in most 924's.... [8|] Various random wires here and there, the horn is wired direct to the battery for some reason, etc etc.

So, my plans are:
Get it running, repair wiring, give it a thorough check over and then get it MOTd and taxed. Clean up the interior and repair whats possible there. Strip external trim and get it repainted (Outer panels only), removing the phone aerial which is fitted into the roof and removing the Zender spoiler. Reinstate the rear stickers and reassemble. It will then be sold on in spring, as I really don't have need for three cars!

Pictures below-enjoy.....

I see Andy's muddy size 12's have been all over those pedals [:D]

I fancy a pre 80 car but I have an issue with that colour. Its a long story. Good luck

PS just picked up some early parts from US for when I do get my hands on an early car. Rear 'porsche 924' metal badges and a good rubber gear gaiter

It's a very unusual colour granted, but I like it-I think it will look very good when repainted with correct silver stickers......
And yes Steve, Andy's size 12's.....[;)]

How many 924s have you got - is that another 2 parked in the road?

Do I detect a handbrake problem - parking in gear and a chock? [;)]

Disagree with comment about the spoiler which I would lose - the thing I like about these early cars (I have a '79) is that they are minimalist and don't look at though they've be put on steroids i.e., they are as close to the original design concept as possible.

Photos look good and doesn't look as bad as you describe. Try sticking a small digital camera or mirror inside the sills and that will tell you if its really rust free and worth the effort.

There's plenty of expertise on this forum if you should need it . . .[8D]

I have a 924 (Yellow) and a 944 (White) at the moment. The red one is additional and cannot stay longterm. (I just don't have the room!)
No handbrake problem, just a steep slope with my mint 924 in the road in front of it! [:D]

The spoiler is going as part of the bodywork tidying. It is a good solid car, but trust me, the pictures are deceptive-the paint is absolutely terrible!
I know the 924 well-I restored the yellow one myself and am a moderator on the 924 club forum, so I know it's not a lemon. [;)]

Not kidding myself about the hours I will need to put in though.......[8|]
