judder in 2nd

Can anyone help? When driving in 2nd at just over 2000rpm and no more than 2500rpm the car starts to judder quite severly. This is most noticable when only feathering the accelarator or trying to keep in that rev range or speed. If pushing on I don't notice anything and at most (and this could be in my mind) just a blip as I go through that part of the rev range in that gear. It doesn't do it at any other point or in any other gear.

What could the cause of this be? I drive an 83 3.2 Targa. Everything else seems fine.

Any suggestions

Many thanks
James

There are other causes that people will suggest, but I had a similar symptom when I needed to replace my air flow meter - only fractionally higher in the rev range. The new AFM fixed most of the problem and a remapped chip fixed the rest.

I have what sounds like an identical problem, at about 2400rpm. I've had the problem since I bought the car last year. The previous owner did point it out, I believe he thought the ECU was the problem and had that replaced, but it didn't cure the fault.

I've also been led to believe that it might be the AFM but I haven't replaced it yet as I'm considering a mass airflow unit, but not sure that I can justify the expense.

I've had a similar problem with my SC on light throttle loads particularly when the engine was cold.

However as part of some other maintenance I replaced all four drive shaft joints as they were worn and causing the car to vibrate at motorway speeds. This not only made the overal transmission and car much smoother it also reduced significantly the juddering.
