Jump Leads

Evening all ! When using jump leads to start the 944, where do you recommend clipping the earth lead (944 battery in the boot) ?
 
Thanks guys - I thought you were meant never to connect the earth to the battery. Always thought it had to be earthed somewhere on the chassis (page 104 of the owner's manual). The one time I did connect the leads direct from battery to battery it gave off a 'rotten egg' smell and I had to have it replaced with another (Porsche) one as I'd lunched it.
 
or do what i did. connect pos to neg, neg to pos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a brown pant moment for a couple of secs. no damage tho thank gawd!!!
 
Although strangely enough on my BMW 5 series the battery is under the rear seat squab ( now thats convenient! - NOT) and you do have a post in the engine compartment for the pos and it says attach to the engine block for the neg.
 
I've always done pos-pos neg-earth on any car I've jump started. Apparently it can cause problems with the electronics on modern cars so I don't take the chance. I can't comment on where to connect the black cable to on the 944, but there must be a couple of earthing cables knocking around there for the lights and wiper that would be ideal candidates.
 
The problem comes from old cars. Old batts vent hydrogen so when you make the final connection and it makes a spark hey presto battery explosion. Always play safe and use an earth way from the battery.

I shouldn't try connecting a positive jump lead to the charging post under the bonnet if I were you. its not intended to take the current load of the starter motor.
If you have a late car with the battery in the boot there is not much choice really . Jump leads are unlikely to be long enough to stretch to the boot and the engine from the donor vehicle's battery
 
+1 to both Rob and Nick's posts. You shouldn,t connect jump leads to both battery terminals if you caan avoid it; and the contacts under the bonnet (on electric tailgate lock cars) can not deal with anything like the current involved.

Ideally (when battery is in the front) connect to the postive and then onto the engine block/lifting hook etc (which earths anyway)
