Anyone tried one of these, or similar: http://images.maplin.co.uk/full/a88jh.jpg

They all seem to claim to work on small engines (eg "Up to 2 litres") - but I assume they mean in cases of a completely dead battery - and that's not what I need. I just want to get something to help out my battery when I expected it to be OK, and it almost turned the engine, but I'd left it parked for just too long.

How many amps do our cars pull from the battery when cranking over?

Black and Decker do a version for larger engines. I recall its hard to find - not only on their web site but also a stockist.

Those fat cables are not for nothing .. IIRC cold crank draws around 60 amps but I'm not going to fry my  Multimeter finding out .. [:-]

cheers, Maurice [:D]

yes, that's the type of figure I'd have expected - but these jump starters seem to have specs like "200amps cranking power", "600amps cranking power", etc - which made me start searching - and I'm finding figures for other cars (quite small ones) like "150". So could well be that ours are over the 200 amp level.
