Jump Start knackered the electrics .... ?

After standing for several months the 944 2.7 wont start, I would say everything worked well before. Recovery (not one of the well known) truck turns up, no mobile starter pack, crawls through the car as the boot wont open, gets in the back and makes a connection with the battrey using with long leads connected to the lorry battery. All a bit long winded, well the sparks start flying like bonfire night, but the car does eventually start.

Very soon afterwards, making a right turn no indicators at all and checking the lights no side or dip or main beam, while the car is driving or parked. Have not yet checked radio or windows etc ......

Checked the relay for indicators and replaced it, still nothing.

So what has actually happend and what is the cure?
 
I only checked the indicator fuses there were about (31/35) four or five for the indicators all seemed ok, are you saying the whole lot might need replacing? Then went to the relays and replaced the number 4 I think which was for all the indicators according to the Legend.

It was a fairly new big tow truck, not sure 12/24 volts[&o]
 
no help now - but under the bonnet in the scuttle area there is a blue cover - remove it and apply 12 volts to that post and earth - boot will open

If he touched the live to to earth could be all sorts of nasties - would understand the reluctance but shouldn't they be sorting it?

They will be sorting it .... not amused when you pay for "special classic car" breakdown cover and amateur nite show up. All explained on the phone at the time, access to battery etc .... They have asked for a report and then two estimates .... [:-]

Maybe one or more earth leads has melted like a fuse - were there smells escaping smoke accompanying the sparks? There is an earth point or 2 below the fuse box might be a good place to start.
 
That was very unsensible of that man... You definately cant give 24v + to a 12v system.... How is she charging....? There is a good chance that the alternator regulator will be toast as well...! [:mad:]
 
sorry to hijack this thread but I currently have an issue with my S2 as in the battery doesn't appear to have enough juice to get her started, my question is should I be wary of jump starting her from my other motor? I appreciate its best to jump from the points under the bonnet rather than the battery in the boot but I have heard some other horror stories regarding damaged ECU's etc.

Any advice would be greatly received and as I said my apologies if this is hijacking a thread, I just can't afford to kill her!
 
Dont jump start it from the post under the bonnet the cable is not up to the task.
Never had an issue starting off the battery terminals.
 
Never jump direct off the battery terminals

Connect to the positive and then connect the earth lead to an earth - the engine for example - ensure the jumping vehicle is overcharging ie; revving and then start yours
 
You got me concerned now.

I don't use my 944 very often and almost every time I have to use a Clarke's Battery Booster to start it. I go straight for the battery.

What damage could I do (I have to say I have been doing this for about 10 months and I am not aware of any electrical problems I have caused.

I wish I could park my car near to the house as I would have a trickle charger going but its in a shared parking area.

Why not? I've been jumping cars for about 30 years and I've not heard of, or experienced, any problems? Assuming the usual common sense things like not attaching the car to a 24000 volt transformer.

I'd second not using the under-bonnet terminal as a jump lead point, it's meant to be an emergency boost to open the rear hatch, in order to attach leads to the battery. [8|]

Des, I thought you'd got rid of the 2.7? How long has it been standing?
 
Sorry, Hilux is right I had a brain fart.
The last connection to be made (and first to remove) should ideally be the negative from the source to a ground on the car with the flat battery, so the spark when you connect the lead isn't above the battery to ignite any gas emitted by the battery causing an explosion.

That said all late 944's have the battery in the cabin and should have a vent tube piped outside the car, so I cant see it being an issue.
If it isn't there fit one.
