PCGB Region 13 Hereford, Worcester & Shropshire
Region 13 Report for June 2012
I got up at 6.15am Sunday morning to arrive at Shobdon about 9am before the crowds came. It had just stopped raining when I and the dog went out. Hopefully, it would clear up and it did, leaving us a fine and warm day but I think the prospects put many off as we were down in numbers from usual. So thanks to the intrepid few who turned up. I arrived about 9.20am after a 40 mph crawl behind a "˜dust cart'.
Graham Corner, brought back some memories with a flight in a glider, from aerotow. Jonathan Short and his brother had a light in a Piper four seater. The rest of us stayed on the ground. Although we were asked to do a drive past down the peri-track and back.
Previously, Jonathan had related to me an unfortunate flight he had had at Shobdon some time ago, wherewith they had a crash landing and wrote off the glider ! I met an old instructor friend of mine in the canteen. He was sat with another fellow. I related this story to him and he pointed at the other guy and said "It was him" !!! Trust me to put my foot in it.
Two days later, we were at the Chateau Impney for our Concours. Jonathan had bravely agreed to judge and was helped by his colleague, Martin. I believe we had 22 Porsches there but all did not enter.
Nevertheless we had a good turn out in front of the Chateau. We used the "Anonymous Concours" judging sheet and added a prize for each separate category as well as "˜overall' . Plus an extra "˜Best interior' as seen from outside. Each having a worthy prize.
David Barnes, walked away with both Overall and Best Interior with his lovely blue 964 RS. Beating Rob Croxford by only three points who nevertheless won "˜best bodywork'. Another 964RS taking "˜best glass'. Steve Cutler with his 997 turbo, "˜best exterior surfaces'. Eric Humphries, best "˜exterior metal trim' and a Carrera 4 GTS with "˜best exterior rubber trim'. Finally. A bottle of wine for Jonathan's hard work
On behalf of SGM Sports Ltd, Jonathan had offered an Annual Service for the Best Overall, which of course went to David Barnes.
Thank you to Jonathan, Martin and all who entered.
We were joined by several Aston Martins, a Ferrari and numerous Classic Cars. Will Gough bringing his Ford Cosworth, Hmmm.
I was pleased to meet Manuel Quieroz who had e mailed me earlier. Apparently, he is the only person to date who has flown around the world in a home built aircraft. He owns a 911, is a Club Member, lives close by and will be coming to our July meeting to give us a taste of a talk about his exploits, which I am hoping to arrange next March.
Another thing to look forward to next year is a trip to the Tramway Museum at Crich. Although this will have to be a week day. Let me know if you fancy this. Don't forget you will have another day off in May, hopefully for another go at Curborough.
August brings us to our National Event at the Chateau Impney. We expect a large number of you will be arriving Saturday morning. We are doing our best with the roads around, to avoid a blockage. If you are coming; particularly from the South or West or anywhere else if you can, PLEASE follow the advice elsewhere in this issue, to avoid the Junction 5 M5 route. On Saturday, there will NOT be a Right Turn into the Main Entrance. Helpers needed to control this. Free entry. E mail to pr.bull@tiscali.co.uk.
Many of you know my son Adrian, he is now doing personalised pencil sketches of Porsches complete with your registration number, either in A5 or larger A4. These will be fine limited edition prints , the A5's with a mount ready to frame. They will be drawn from a photograph of your car. If you are interested, please get in touch with me. Next time we meet, I should have samples.
FORTHCOMING EVENTS.
Meetings now at Chateau Impney unless stated otherwise.
31st July Manuel Quieroz on flying around the world.
18/19 August, National Event, Chateau Impney. Helpers wanted, Free Pass.
30th October Continental Tyres.
30th November Tuesday, A reminder of the sun. Andy Nevitt is planning to give us a
