Is it normal for the engine to make a low tapping noise? i was once told that it was...however today, a friend said that i should get the tappets looked at before the engine blows!!! you can imagine how fast my heart is going!! any views......PLEASE....

I would take it to a porsche mechanic just to be sure. Ticky/tappet sounds could be the result of many issues and unless you can hear it yourself, very difficult to conclude any issues........

... and I am told that neither of them are anything to worry about (injectors or tappets.)

But, as you said, get it to an indie pronto to allow your heartbeat to return to normal.

well my thanks guys, i took it to my porsche garage and they confirmed exactly that....injectors, and nothing at all to worry about!! yay!! a perfectly normal engine tapping sound, few...im so relieved..BIG THANKYOU TO YOU AS ALWAYS .

When I asked my indie about ticky injectors, he said they could be changed (at 3-figures each, in cost), and there was no garuntee that the replacements would be any better than the outgoing ones ...

... that several-hundred-quid thus made itself comfortable in my wallet once again ...

Mine still tick, but had them removed and flow/spray-pattern tested and they were given a clean bill of health, so nothing to worry about[:D]

Is it me or is it always the number 3 injector? Injector 3 on my S2 is slightly ticky. The 968 I bought last week developed a ticking sound on the way home, at first I thought it was an exhaust/manifold leak as it also has a heat shield rattle. Thing is I spent ages poking around her today and found 2 things;
1) Loads of noises some a bit worrying sounding coming from up front, sprayed some rost off on the aux belts and everything went quiet, well almost. Seems like the last garage to service the car spilt oil all over the PAS belt changing the oil filter. Was nice and quiet when I inspected the car and at the time I diagnosed the only oil to be seen as spillage from the filter so sometimes I guess just need to join the dots.
2) Fairly loud clicky noise then is clearly heard up top, God no not the variocam or chain etc. I was thinking. Put my head on the cam cover, no odd noises in there. Put my ear next to the fuel rail and its loudest right over injector 3.

Doesn't seem to be any problems in the exhaust / manifold / heat shield department so I am now left wondering what is rattling, looks to me like the metal pan cover / sheild thing behind the undertray that you get on a 968 has a bend in it. Its very close to the exhaust, perhaps the engine mounts are getting a bit low as well. I am just praying that the CAT is not falling apart inside.

Its maddening tracking down and curing all these odd sounds.

944s have hydraulic tappets and tend to be noisy if the car hasn`t been run for a while (the oil drains out) after they`ve refilled the noise goes away.The injector solenoids tick quite noticeably though and as already stated is normal.

My first guess would be the injectors. People who arent familiar with the cars usually suggest that the tappets are noisy, upon opening the bonnet...

I also have encountered the ticking S2 injectors, I put a bottle of 'slick' injector cleaner in the fuel tank and they went completely quiet - for about 10minutes - so £15 well spent then!

Hi Nick - haven't seen you around for a while. Are you planning to get over to the Christmas meet at Cornbury House next Sunday?

Sorry to the moderators for going Off Topic :ROFLMAO:
