Off to buy/pickup my 1st 993 next week .... Zenith Blue Targa so getting a bit excited.... could someone tell me what i should be looking for .....

I presume the drivers handbook was a leatherette affair ? how many set,s of keys should be with it , Obviously there is a servicebook what are the other key bits i should be making sure it has .....

It is over in Ireland so it,s a fair way to go, just want to make sure i dont miss anything ... dont want to come back on an 8 hour ferry without things i should have with the car .....

She is as straight as a dye but anything i should really concentrate on when looking over her ..... im ok with the impacts but this is a whole new ball game .....

ANY advice greatly appreciated

My car came with a Red key in a box. I understand its one of those items you hope you never need, but its important you have it just in case!

The radio code is worth having and if an aftermarket unit has been fitted, the instruction book to go with it

.

Things that spring to mind....... (what ours came with)

Leatherette holder.. containing

[blockquote]

spare key
spare black remote
red remote - if a pa1000 alarm.. used to programme new black remotes.(about £80 to replace). don't think a pa2000 has this.?
drivers manual
alarm owners manual
maintenance handbook
service guide - details opc's around the world.?
radio manual
radio code
And a master Key Alarm override - fits in the back of the siren to totally disable the alarm.. Our is missing so when I ever disconnect ther battery the alarms goes off until the battery back runs out..![/blockquote]
Air compressor
LOCKING WHEEL nut
Tools roll containing various bits.. like towing eye, screw drivers, spanners, ...
Jack

I beleive you may also find thing like, but i doubt it now..
wheel bag.. used to store your dirty wheel if you have to use the space saver.
first aid kits
warning triangle

Hi.

As a Targa owner here are a few things you should look for

1) Check all roof Seals - all clean, complete no rips etc
2) Check Alignment of glass - All the glass should be pretty level all over
3) If possible get a hose pipe and test for leaks
4) Check under mats to make sure its dry
5) Check that the Electric Sun blind works and that there are no broken clips
6) Check the door glass when you close the door against the seals.

You don't really get much wind noise wit the roof open till your 90+ Mph! You might get a few rattles & creaks. I have PDF files on roof alignment and water leaks.
Check A/C (Standard on Targa's!)
Check if it has the standard Targa Split Rims (17")
Check tire wear is even (geometry!)
Check history and see what services have been done and when the next one is due
Check carpet under bonnet to make sure its not damp
Check you have Space saver wheel, tools etc (Jack, Compressor etc)
Check the Power Steering + fluid levels - The racks do go. Mine did 3 years ago!
Should be 2 sets of black keys & remotes and one Red one (I never had a red one when I bought mine!)
Check around the front and rear screen for rust bubbles

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head

Hope all goes well.
You will love the Targa. I do. Just wish the rain would stay away!
You will have to post some pics when you have it

Graham

Thanks guys i will print this lot off and take it with me .... It doesn,t have the original Targa wheel,s but has the classic wheel,s and looks really nice ... not too sure if this should be a put off or not really .. suppose it makes it look a bit different .... I dont suppose i could get the originals now

Hi,

The answers above seem pretty comprehensive so no need to add to them. Just a comment though, my Targa has the Cup 2s on instead of the originals splits and IMHO it looks fine...

Graham - any chance you can email me the PDF for roof alignment? Having done just about everything else on the car I now need to address the slight roof leak I get in heavy rain.

Cheers/John

The standard answer on here tends to be, unless you know 993s inside out, get a full professional Pre-Purchase Inspection done. This should cover all aspects of the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, body etc and should highlight if there are going to be any nasty bills. These cars can be very exensive to put right if they go wrong. Also it will give some room for negotiating on price.

There are some reputable specialists who can do the above inspection.

The most important thing is to make sure the body is straight, accident free, and the car hasn't been stolen.

Playing Devils advocate but if it's from Southern Ireland I believe it will need importing. If Northern then it dosent as I bought mine from Belfast even though I was told by DVLA that I needed to import it, as usual most of the staff at DVLA don't know what they are on about however I did get my hands on some government paperwork from somewhere that said importing not required from NI.

No it,s originally from over here but found it,s way over to N.I last year ..... so all ok to bring back no prob,s ......

I have spoken to the specialist out in Belfast who assures me it is 9/10 apart from the rear bumper brackets that will need attention at some stage , think this is a common fault ?? ...

I will get some pic up when i get it home ...

could someone tell me what i should be looking for .....

You dont say if its private or trade - either way make sure there is no outstanding finance or the car.
Also have the HPI check done, you dont want to be buying a Cat D or write off!
Think hard if you are going to take cash - you dont want to walk into an ambush ( I know it me sound silly but it does happen)
Have you had a indi inspect of the car?
Dont be frigthened to walk away if you dont like something!

Sorry to be a bit on the down side but would not like you to buy a lemon.

Oh - and if everythin is OK - ENJOY

The rear PU mounts are a known problem as they're very exposed, appear to be mild steel and tend to rot away. Don't underestimate the cost of replacement (as with a lot of things on these cars it's a fairly expensive job...). From what I understand some people have Hammerited the replacement mounts to try and extend their life. Not sure how effective this is, and not something I've done, so this isn't a recommendation!

When they're being done you may find some heat shields need replacing as well. Perhaps whoever you're using locally can give you a ballpark figure for the job?
