hi guys and compliments on the page. Ok so I finally plunge to own my dream car , so I now own a 86 ovaldash 944 reg d833 twv ,wow I love it drove the 350 miles home with out a hitch on £38 fuel!

Ok some minor problems like blokes rain tubes and badly fitted dash parts etc

But I need your help?

At idle and take of it has a bad vibe almost like when you run a car I high gear or like taken of in five from a standstill but when running on the motorway or at a constant speed she's smooth?????

Second the oil pressure gauge is pinned at 5 bar and doesn't move unless I turn her off???? Oil sender???

And 3rd there's damp in the rear driver foot well? Were could this be from

I am so gratefull for any help that you could give to a new owner

Oh and she'd done 196,000 when I got her now up to 199,000 recon maybe a new engine soon or is this common for a 2.5 to pass 200k?

Thanks Wayne

Hi Wayne - sounds like you've got a few of the usual problems

1. Engine mounts - o/s under the exhaust is prone to failure, but might be worth getting both done.

2. Oil sender needs replacing. (I'm assuming it pins at 5 as soon as you turn the ignition on). The other possibility is that the terminals are on the wrong way round (2 connectors on the sender) - might be worth checking first.

3. Could be all sorts of places it leaks from - the sunroof drains are favourites. Remove the sunroof & you'll see drain holes in each corner. Pour some water down & see where it comes out! (all my 24/44's have been water tight so I don't have much experience of leak finding)

I don't think we have many on the forum past 200k yet, but the general consensus is there's no reason why these engines, especially 2.5 8V, won't do huge mileages. A lot depends on how it's been treated. If it's going well, then why worry?

The other thing I'd suggest is to get an alignment done - can make a huge difference to the way the car drives.

As Ed Said! [:)]

My next-door-neighbour has a 1986 Lux that has been his 12K-per-year daily driver for about 12 years or more. Now well over the 200K milestone it's still as reliable as their current X-Type diesel, and way more reliable than their Freelander was.

He still takes it over to the Isle Of Wight to be serviced by the same specialist who used to be local, and in the 11 years I've been here I can only remember wishbones, fuel pressure regulator, a DME relay and plastic pin in the door lock being needed outside of regular servicing. Living outside, I heard it start fine today despite the cold, as always.

It just goes to prove what we keep saying. These cars run far better with regular use. Hence the concerns over low-mileage cars like the one mentioned in another thread here. [:)]

That's amazing - two 1986 Luxs living next to each other. I think I've seen about 15 944s in all the time I've had mine, a year this weekend coming.

thanks guys, thought it might be the mounts so I'll get them done can anyone tell me a good place near pert for servicing?

And I need two dash bits the bit around the heater controls and the bit above the glove box any one got them for sale oh and a black rear carpet set would be nice

350 miles on £38 worth of fuel! Wow, I've never managed that (even on a run I rarely get more than just over 300 miles and that's from a full tank [:)]).

The oil pressure gauge might also be a bad connection, from memory if the earth is poor then it will also read 5 bar, my 944S has the same fault and had a new sender before I bought the car which didn't fix it. It's one of those jobs I'll get around to when it's warmer. Odds on it is the sender as Ed mentioned, but it might be worth measuring it through first.

Try eBay for the bits you need, or maybe mail order from Porsch-Apart. If you phone them they can usually source all those little plastic bits and pieces.

For servicing/mounts you could try taking the car to Motortune in Shotts or Brian Miller Motors in Edinburgh. Not sure of anywhere further north, I'm afraid.

I don't think there is anyone between Edinburgh and Aberdeen and I don't know what the Aberdeen indie(s) are like, so I think the Edinburgh one is your best bet in terms of being local(ish). Back when I lived in Montrose ironically Perth was where I went as that was where the OPC used to be.

I'd suggest calling Exeter Porsche Centre for parts before anyone else. Chris in parts does a fantastic deal, usually free p&p.

I've priced some interior parts used, and new, from other suppliers like Porsche-apart, and they were dearer than brand new from Exeter. E-bay is often stupidly expensive, as people believe the sellers that parts are unobtainable or that Porsche are expensive. It helps if you have part numbers, either from the damaged parts, from PET or from someone here if you post what you need. [:)]

I was over in Guildford last Tuesday - at Avaya just off the A30 - LIL's longest jaunt so far - we should meet up! I'm heading to London on Sun 18th to meet up with Oli - do some tinkering and have a pint....

Check the balance belt is still in one piece. this could be your vibration problemo, counter rotaing shajys are used to smooth engine vibration out.

Actually it's why I bought mine! I'd been wanting a 944 for nearly 20 years, since my Father ran them as company cars when new. Seeing my neighbours, I suggested I'd buy it from him at some point. After 6 years I gave up and got VJ, we now have a matching pair. [:)]

Of course having said just this I went off to gather mine from the peace and tranquility of its garage (a stones throw from Avaya as it goes) only to see a Baltic Blue S2 and then a Guards Red S2 or Turbo within about 30 seconds of each other. Typical!!

Anyway, it's out of the garage as I'm off to Northway tomorrow for a service and to have a few gremlins fixed. Let's hope it's less dramatic than last year's bill.

Will check the 18th against the diary - a great idea.

James,

18th ... yes. You'd be more than welcome. Thread here:
