Just bought a C4 !! advise needed

Hi All...

Just traded my cayenne for a nice 2002 black C4, new to these and bought it on a whim really....

Firstly, the car has only done 30k as it has lived in london most of its life, but the key fob (3 button) is very worn..
Can anyone advise on the best (read cheapest) way of replacing this? On my old Range rover i could get "repair" buttons.. any such thing on these?

2nd problem... the sat nav screen or unit is faulty.. any advise? the problem is that it is just covered in coloured lines that are constantly moving... I was told that although it was working for sound etc, the screen was faulty, but then the car had a new hood fitted and tha batt was disconectd... So now no music.. Am i right in thinking i need a code or something?

Any advise would be appreciated...

I paid £20k for the car, well below book i believe because of these problems....

Gary!!

Yes, you can buy just the button part of the key head. An OPC should be able to sort you out.

As for the satnav screen, there probably isn't much you can do. It won't be a code problem. You could try a software reset (press and hold buttons 1, 4, and 8 simultaneously). If that doesn't work, then you need to find a specialist repairer.

And by the way:

Thanks.. will try exeter porsche on monday, and a reset on the car tomorrow, thanks for tha advise...

Heres a pic, and will be joining the club immediatly!!!

What on earth is that in the background? [8|] Obviously a bit of an eclectic collection!

Is it for running to the shops to save risking car park damage to the 996? [:D]

Welcome. Awesome looking car.

Be very interested to know what the dodgy lines on the PCM are. My car (997) also has these occasionally and my local indy has done some diagnostics - all to no avail. They recommend sending the screen to a specialist (it can be removed) which given that it is an intermittent fault, I'll do in the Autumn when I'm not using it so much.

Have fun!

LOL..

The beast in the background is a Hummer.. Not mine im glad to say, it belonged to the guy it bought the 996 from...

The plot thickens....... So Ill give the whole story.....

The car is a Cat D, No panel damage, just the soft top was wrecked, cut open and set on fire. but put itself out.!!
However, the guy had a complete new roof fitted including frame by porsche at a cost of just over £6K
I own a bodyshop that restores classic cars and carries out accident repair work so i know what to look for
and I am 100% confident that there has been no panel or paint work done on this car, So I was happy to buy
as cat D is not on the log book, and I know it hasn't been in a crunch...

Anyway, I have 2 issues to sort as i hate things not being right...

Main one is the lines on the screen.. obviously I have no music, no sat nav and no phone...
below is a picture of the lines on the screen so you can see what im talking about...
Also, as it is a cat D there is no paperwork with the car, I have traced when and where it was serviced so will go about getting a replacement service book stamped up, But even when my screen is sorted, I will have no code for it.. How much of an issue is this, can I get it from Porsche or should I just give up and buy a new screen unit? I see guys on ebay advertising for £150 just to decode these head units and they all claim that the units are very difficult to do????? Any truth there?

2nd Big issue is a bit worrying, but has checked out ok???????????????????????????????????????????????

I am loosing a very small amount of coolant, and getting the warning light...

So head gasket started creeping in my head... Doom and gloom spread over the skies above me..

So checked the coolant for signs of CO2 with a sniffer... Absolutely fine, so thought mst be a small leak
somewhere...
Pressurised the sytem and watched... nothing, the pressure just sat there, didnt move, and when i started the car the pressure remained absolutly constant so that pretty much rules out head gasket, and it appears not to have a leak, certainly nothing visible...

Any advise would be appreciated...

Love the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PCM - It depends when in 2002 the car was built. If after 1st September it will be PCM2, and there are no security codes to enter. The unit is matched to the DME, so when you disconnect and re-connect the battery, it automatically pairs itself. If prior to September, then it is PCM1 and has user-entry codes. You can get them from Porsche, or if you know someone with a Porsche tester, they are often stored in the DME vehicle data, and can be read out by the tester. It won't be the code causing the lines though.

As for coolant loss, first thing to do is check the coolant tank cap. If the part number ends in 00, these are prone to leaking, and could be causing the problem. The header tank itself is prone to pinholes and cracks (at the back where you can't see it). Both usually cause a few drips of coolant at the rear left of the car, just under the tank. Drips of coolant at the front end are usually a leaky rad.

Most likely the cap though, if you have pressurised the system. Did you check the cap?

Jus to add to Richard's bit about coolant loss, my car was not losing coolant but I kept smelling the sweet smell of warm coolant from the front for 1 year and presurising the system revealed no loss of pressure. Yet when I changed the centre radiator, the smell is gone. There were no obvious drips etc but pinholes can be so small that any coolant loss evaporates before you see it. To be fair, if you are losing coolant you should see stains on the radiator if it is leaking. It is usually the side radiators that give way first due to corrosion.

The bulb just lit!!!

The pressure test was fine.. but did not include the cap.. just checked it and it ends in 01 so a trip to OPC tomoroow
it is then!!

The car is booked into OPC on wednesday for a check over, Having a new key fob programmed at the same time and was told they will run the tester on the car to see if there are any errors showing, of if any in the past.

Am i right in assuming then that if the PCM needs a code it could be read at the same time?

While they have the PIWIS tester connected, ask them to read the Vehicle Data from the DME, to see if the navigation codes are stored. If not, the OPC will be able to get them for you, but they usually ask you for a copy of the V5C as proof of ownership. I expect they asked you for this for the key programming, and they will get the PCM codes at the same time if you ask them.

This forum is so good when it comes to problems,As I explained to richard about the coolant leak I seem to have
On our c4s,It's been in the garage all day,PU off car running, pressure tested nothing,So it looks like the cap which finishes also in 01
Also having PU re-sprayed,mesh fitted and parking sensors[:D] I shall get some photo's posted when complete
Paul

Sorry to hijack this thread - but you mention getting parking sensors fitted, which is something I'm thinking of doing. Have you decided on which ones to fit and who to fit them?

Well... The car has been to porsche exeter for its "health check"...

Nothing too serious to report, just a few niggles..

PCM not working- got a good 2nd hand one with code card for £400
Sun visor damaged- 2nd hand one on way for £30
Brake pads worn- Euro car parts £35 (mintex)
New key fob bought and programmed- £140
2 tyres required on the front, (3mm tread)
New front carpets £45

So all in all I think I got a good buy..

Had the boys in my paint shop re-paint the front bumper this morning as it had a few stonechips,
Turns out it is exactly the same colour and variant as the cayenne ive just sold!! The colur is spot on[:D]

Now, I do have one more issue...
When the roof was on fire (it must have been a very small area) Im guessing something dripped from the roof
onto the carpet.. and it is marked, not in a big way, just in a few small areas.
Any ideas or advise for replacing it? should i go to a vehicle trimmer and just get the damaged parts replaced
or should i search for a complete replacement carpet 2nd hand? If so, any one know good sources?

thanks again

I too have recently bought a C4 and my PCM2 works, but the phone pick up button is missing and a few others are very loose.

Does anyone know if I can get some replacement buttons for the unit or any good places to get a secondhand unit if that is the only option?

Thanks for your help.

Andrew

The buttons aren't available separately from Porsche, but you could try a Becker service agent. I have only seen one recommendation (on another forum):

Putnoe Radio Services
12 Clifton Ave
Hartlepool
TS26 9QN
01429 869220

No personal experience, but it wouldn't do any harm to give them a call.

Being PCM2, these units tend to be fairly expensive second hand. You could try eBay though - you get the odd one or two on there.

First edit: Sorry - I forgot:
