Just bought an '81 SC. Now the questions!

Just bought a very tidy oak green 911 SC with all the credit going to my inspector Trevor Messitt. If there's something wrong he won't missit (sorry Trevor!). All the big things were in excellent order, but a few little things I want to sort at some stage that I need to get people to do for me are mentioned below.

The car has beautiful period sports seats fitted in green leather, fitted as an original option I believe. There is a small patch of wear with a small split and I would like to get this attended to by a specialist. Anyone know great interiors people? I'm in S.London Battersea and would prefer somewhere down that way or off the M4 but anywhere within reasonable accessability of London is fine.

The alarm and its associated wiring needs a checkover. The previous owner kept the car on trickle charge and as I haven't got that luxury I need to make sure things are in order and that the alarm/immobiliser isn't draining the battery any more than it should (the owner honestly told me that he thought it may be). Again, any ideas for a good place to get this looked over? I'm reluctant to take it to any old alarm shop but maybe I'm being over fussy and it's all standard stuff.

The infamous heater probably needs attention before the winter. So far I've been directed to Northway Porsche just off the M4. If anyone has any other servicing recommendations in South West London/Surrey/M4 within easy reach of London I'd be glad to have them.

What else? Not much, and certainly not for the money! It is missing the inflator machine(!) for the spare tyre. Any idea where I can pick up one of those?

Again, many thanks to Trevor Messitt who I'd heartily recommend to any beginner like me in a similar situation.

Congratulations on buying an SC I know Trevor I bet you've got a good motor. I can't recommend

more highly. You coukd try looking on Ebay for a tyre inflator or keep your eyes peeled in PP.

Hi Alex, glad you found a car mate, well done and welcome to the wonderful world of 911 ownership, just arrived myself and it's all it's cracked up to be and more.

Southbound have certainly got a great reputation but nearer you there is Creech Coachtrimming in Crystal Palace (if they are still there!), they are great and will redo your bolster on it's own if that's what you want.

London Porsche specialists, I know some of the guys on here use Chelsea Carrera and rate them highly, just over the river from you. The only people I ever wanted to look after my car when I was looking and lived in St. Reatham are on my doorstep nowadays, Autofarm and Tuthills. You won't do better than your region's recommendations mate, they have been there and done it, so should you!

Regarding autoelectrics, the guy I used in London (Andy) is in Norbury by the BR station. He is a star, let me know if you want his number. It might not be the alarm that is running the battery down. My first instincts would be to change the battery itself if it's over 2 years old, could be that the plates are coated and joining up at the bottom, so is discharging itself - for the sake of £50 get a new Bosch silvertop from German and Swedish in Stockwell or wherever they are down Sarf London nowadays. 5 years guarantee, proper Bosch power and you get the thrill of a drive thru Brixton in your new 911!

Next thing to check would be circuits, alternator and starter windings etc for discharging - Andy can do all that for you for not a lot of money and then fix the problem or rebuild the offending article for again not a lot. If it's a reputable alarm that has been professionally installed then it is unlikely to be causing a problem (in my experience that is).

Good luck with it, did you sell your guitars then BTW?!

Cheers ,

JG

Lexman,

Hi congratulations on your purchase, I hope you enjoy it and it doesn't empty your wallet quite as much as mine is at the moment!

With regard to the tyre inflator, if you want a genuine one as Bones has said ebay is good place to look, they come up quite often (usually at a premium for a good one though)

Here is one that currently has about 9 hours of the auction remaining (Porsche Tyre/Tire Inflator Kit - for 911 928 930 944 Item number: 2473091699)

If you are not worried about having an original one Halfords do a good range of Michelin ones (I bought a digital Michelin one - very happy with it, quite a bit cheaper than a second hand genuine one)

Good luck with your car, & stick a piccy or two on here so we can see your new pride and joy.
Cheers Dan.

Alex, Dan is right, ebay is mad money for a genuine Porsche compressor, buy a halfords one they are okay, have been using mine up to 60 psi for about 4 years and still going strong (though their battery charger blew up after a year), will drag that guys number out for you asap mate.

I never thought I'd be so happy in Halfords!! How sad is that? Yes along with my one hundred cleaning, shining and polishing purchases I neglected to buy one thing that could actually get me home in an emergency but I did check out the tyre inflators. You're right and I'll go back and get one. Chelsea Carrera seem very professional and courteous so far by the way...

They are that, and I've been going there for years.
Not only that, they are prepared to listen to questions, no matter how silly (and mine have been), and offer advice. And they don't do work that doesn't need doing.

And I get no commission from them.
