Just bought an S2

DIB

New member
Hi, thought I would post some pics of the S2 I have just bought. It's an 1990 in Turkish Blue Metallic with Linen Leather. The car is in very good condition and I am hoping to pick it up next week once the present owner has it MOT'ed. It has an unusal body kit and 18" Gemballa alloys. Mileage is 144k with extensive history and belts done around 5k ago.
Any comments or tips would be appreciated!

It certainly looks very nice and I love that colour. The rear hatch will divide opinion [;)] but if you like it that doesn't matter and if you don't you can always blame the previous owner [:D]

Thanks for the pics and let us know how you get on once you pick it up

Thanks Paul, I like the hatch. It's a bit different, apparently was fitted by JCT600 when the car was new. The rest of the kit sets the car off. It has been lying for around a year so needs a good clean inside. Tons of history though and the car runs very well. I paid £3k which I think is a good price???? Perhaps you can enlighten me[8|]

very unusual hatch, never seen that before. Let us know more if you find out. Was it JCT600 Bradford/Leeds? £3k sounds about right for a 140k S2.

looks tidy, like the chin spoiler. isnt that the strosek hatch (minus the extra spoiler)? any chance of a profile shot when you get it?

Strosek hatch is it not?

If you're adamant it is staying on 18s I'd be fitting 968 castor mounts asap. They're recommended fitment when using 17s over 16s.

Lovely colour and looks in very good nick from the pics. I think the hatch is indeed Strosek...certainly quite distinctive ! I would +1 on getting 968 Castor mounts with the bigger wheels - makes a very significent difference for not much outlay. As for the belts - how many years ago were they done rather than mileage ?

Well done on your purchase. I'm in Edinburgh and I did see this that car advertised in the ? Glasgow area but I think the seller was originally looking for about £5k and then progressly dropped the price.

This is a fantastic colour. The rear hatch isn't for me but everyone has different opinions. £3k is perhaps about right assuming decent level of mechanicals. Assuming you've bought on condition then the mileage is not too important. I've been to see several 944's with mileages in the 90k-120k bracket and didn't buy them as they were no better (in fact, all of them were worse) than my old s2. I actually ended by buying back my old s2 (166k) after a 2 year absence at a fair price and with the security of knowing it wasn't a bad 'un.

Best wishes with it and let us know how you find it.

Thanks for the tip on the 968 castors guys, will check if this has been done. It was for sale in Glasgow, mechanicals are good with lots of history and cambelts done in last year. It's a two owner car from new and the interior is very good also. I have had quite a number of classic cars over the years and always by on condition and/or history over mileage. Really looking forward to getting the car and will post an update and further pics!

ORIGINAL: Diver944

The rear hatch will divide opinion [;)]
I disagree - my opinion of the rear hatch isn't divided at all. It's simply, categorically awful! [:'(] £50 would probably get you a good standard replacement from Alasdair (sulzeruk on here - he breaks them and is in Scotland as well) and it would then look a whole load better. And that would have the black rear spoiler as well, which would be another improvement IMHO.

BUT, as Paul said, it is a matter of opinion, so if you like it then keep it.

Same goes for that front lower spoiler. Not to my taste at all. In black it would be better. If absent, it would be better still. But, a matter of taste.

Other than that, looks good. Caster mounts will help, as will driving it long and hard. If it's been standing for a year then it will need a lot of cobwebs blowing out of it, which I am sure you can manage! [;)]

Congratulations on your purchase. It looks like a nice one (while looking awful, if you see what I mean!)

Oli.

I wonder whether that is an original/genuine Strosek part? I prefer the later SportKombi hatch, although Ive only ever seen it on 968s.

Nice colour.
BUT.
Im NOT a fan of the body "styling", if thats what you want to call it...[:'(][:'(][:'(]
Personally ide be removing it all + returning to standard. It looks like its got the chunky side skirts fitted aswell. I hope its not covering up any rust....
Hope you enjoy your new toy...

Side skirts not hiding any rust, in fact there is no rust on the car at all. I look at these things as a cheap bit of fun and if the "body styling" (that is what I think you would call it[;)]) causes a strong reaction even better!!! Had a standard 944 2.5 a few years ago as a second car and got rid of it as it was too "anonymous" for me....the late 80's "greed is good" look appeals to my perverse nature[;)]

Looks very good, like the front, side ok but I dont like the bak!
But I know what you mean about having a talking point.
Use it and enjoy it and I'd love to see it in the flesh!
Good luck with it.

Well said. Whilst there are still loads of cars around and they are so cheap what's wrong with a bit of fun? This isn't a car that's been chavved withing an inch of it's life, it's a period coversion and, as such, a very good thing. If I ever see one of the 944 shooting brakes for sale I'll be buying it like a shot, and I really like the Strosek hatch. If the flying buttresses are ok on an XJS, and MR2, or a BMW 6-series cab then who could argue?

If youve got a few spare minutes Paul, you should Google "Porsche 968 SportKombi"; or perhaps a cunning combination including Strosek. It increases the carrying capacity somewhat like a shooting brake, but whilst retaining the original coachwork.

Post a link, I tried a quick look but just got the above tailgate or the "Allegro" estate 924 that I love so much.

I'm certain I saw that car in Clydebank approx 4yrs ago.

Hatch = honkin' to my eyes, but the rest of it looked very tidy from memory. [8D]
