Just bought...

Hi All,

After going through a few other models over the years, now back in 997 ownership.

Just bought a 997.2 C2 PDK and initial impressions are very good.

I've had a 997.1 C2S in the past, and the Gen.2 non-S variant does not feel noticeably less powerful. Could be the combination of slightly more powerful engine and less weight ?

Anyway, initial impressions are super - it feels very sharp to drive, not wildly different to the 987 Spyder we used to have.

Had a huge (and childish) grin on my face when leaving home this morning, just seeing it in the garage awaiting the second drive!

Will try to get a couple of pics up.

Am already thinking about getting a paddle wheel (with stereo controls if poss) and cruise control fitted!

Think I also need to have the PSE flaps checked, as they seem to be stuck (ie. no change in sound when the PSE button is switched on/off). Does anyone know if the flaps can be manually/easily unstuck ? Or will it require a visit to the stealership?

Thanks!

Hi, Sounds a nice motor - congrats.

The Gen 2 NON S is 345bhp whilst the Gen 1 "S" is 355bhp - hence very close power wise. for the gen 2 S - this went to 385 effectively like the gen 1 with X51 pack option.

When I got my 997 my PSE was not working and it turned out to be the vacuum actuators on the exhaust. The dealer ( PCT Coventry ) readily changed both of them and they are now fine. The key thing is that I was told they had only recently become available as a separate part from the silencer - so don't get told you need a new system if this is the issue.

The other dilemma is that it sounds so good - but cuts out between 30-50mph. Just when the sound is getting good. If you unplug the vacuum solenoid on the right of the engine bay - its loud all the time. (Sorry Environment, but i'm addicted to my exhaust noise.)

Hi,

Great choice and great car - I've had one for 18 months and drive it every day.

Just before you buy the paddles steering wheel, It's worth learning how to use the throttle to it's best effect - if you tap it, it will change down for you, bump the revs and hold the speed - perfect for an overtake and avoids waiting for the kickdown to happen if you go that route - and also is quicker than the paddles or steering wheel switches - as both have to step through the gears - tapping the throttle takes you directly to the gear needed.

Recently being post 996.

My PSE plug is disconnected too, i like the sound all of the time, seems pointless to me having a switch that opens the noise up but only for the system to close the valves at certain speeds, perhaps i would have it connected if i the option was switching to loud mode and it stayed all the time, then quiet mode available if i wanted to, just what were they thinking in providing a switch that makes it loud a bit of the time.

Thanks Clive, appreciated! Fully agree with you re the noise abatement (I think that's what it was called) between 30-50mph. My 996 C4S had a small relay for the PSE in which it was possible to cut a diode to prevent the 30-50mph silencing... Don't think that is possible with the 997 PSE (or at least with the Gen 2 cars)

thanks Jo! I had no idea about the throttle tapping! May have to pop out today to have a go! May tempt me not to bother with the paddles... :)

Think it related to EU/noise regulations IIRC. I believe Carnewal sell a remote that allows the flaps to be either fully open/closed at all times, it's about €150 and easy to install (and also to put back to standard).

Jo - tried this on Sunday when I took the car out for a spin. VERY cool feature! As you rightly said, it changes immediately to the right gear and is a fantastic feature!! Thanks again for pointing out.

Thanks for the tip on the throttle, I hadn't been using a stab of the throttle -short of full kickdown- to select gears like this until I read your thread and as you say straight form 7th to 3rd is instantaneous( perhaps everyone out there always new this and is saying Dooh but I'm not sure it's that obvious as I always reached straight for the paddles and knocked it down 1 or 2[:)])
It's a great feature
