Just got my alloys powder coated.

Big up for KMH in Wigston, Leicester.

Cost me £40 all in per wheel, for a full refurb, powder coat and laquer. The work is fantastic, I cant wait to get them on the car. They are only a small company and require tyres taken off but if your interested in using them call 0116 2770050.

They are soooo shinny I had to dull down the pics, the only down side is its hard for them to get all the way into the bolt holes, but you can hardly notice this and I will give them a quick spray from a can before I fix them on.

You can choose from over 500 colours but they dont do polished rims (which I wanted) but for £40 per corner I cant complain. Alloy center lost some of the emblems sharpness but I gathered this would happen ( Im going to order some black with coloured crests on them).

The cheapest I could find for polished rims + paint was £125+vat, so I thought I would save the extra £££ for some tyres. They wont be on the car for some time as it is having the steering pump reconditioned at the mo.

The inserts look ok for now but I need to find a better concaved cap to look spot on. They are a spare set of alloys so toying with the idear of fitting some summer rd / track tyres (if I ever dare track her)[:)]


 
I was toying with the idea of going black but looking for more of an matt finish. In the end decided to stay silver, but you have got me thinking[;)]

I wouldent have done this if it was my only set of alloys, but seeing they needed a full refurb anyway I thought I might as well.
I gather most powder coating companys will do this for the same price, should be loads of local ones to you. But I gather if you over cook them you get a Hamerite finish, but mine came out very smooth [;)].

Best bet is to buy some that need a full refurb off ebay and get them powder coated matt black, you can choose from so many colours its best to go there knowing what you want.

Sure is a lot better finish than the normal alloy refurbs I have had before, and from what I have heard, its so much stronger than normal painted alloys you can use chemical brake dust remover with no problems. Also the brake dust does not easily stick to the surface so its a lot easier to remove. ( but I will treat them as normal alloys and take very god care of them, I think I will zymol them before they are put on the car[:D]).

Ian, one of the main reasons I went ahead with it as soon as I did was I saw a fantastic LHD 964 RS in midnight blue (I believe) at last weekends auto jumble. The owner had gloss black mags on it. Nice guy, the car was stunning. The black alloys went so well with the dark blue. Black would look very cool on either one of your cars.

Are the rims polished on those Ian? I love the older fuchs look, my old black 3.2 looked the mutt's nuts . My C2 is midnight blue and if it's only £40 a corner I'm sorely tempted though I'm in two minds as to whether to go for a completely matt black mad-max sort of look or midnight blue
 
Rims are painted silver and not polished. Centers are Midnight Blue to match car. They are tricky to mask and as such cost a lot more than £40 quid a corner. I reckon where ever you go they'll cost £120 - £150 a corner for that style including refurbishment. Standard silver including refurbishment seems to usually cost about £80 a corner (painted and laquered not powder coated). £40 a corner for the all black look is very good value.

Well it was actually £35 a corner for me as I was a lucky sod, but they didnt realise how big 18" Turbo wheels are[:D] They let me have it for the price they stated though as long as I put a few posts around for them.

Ian is right in saying I doubt you will get polished rims or bi-colour cheap, this is just a small company, infact they rang me up asking if I could pick the alloys up asap as they were in the way ( they had them laid out on carboard so they wouldent damage them). Its not just alloys - Im going to ask them if they will do my cast iron gate, sure would beat sanding it down every year.

Heres there flyer, they must have moved and couldent be bothered to print more up. I gather they work on reputation.

I love your alloys Ian, superb job, I am going to look into those tyres, they look like what I want. Did you find a place that does them for a reasonable sum?

I am not sure "Pilot Sport Cups" and "reasonable sum" can co-exist in the same sentence [:eek:]

I am fortunate enough to be able to buy them at the PCGB motorsport events from the on track tyre support people as I compete in the Club Championship. I know they also sell them on PCGB track days.

I am not sure if they sell them through a general outlet. I'll ask at Castle Combe on Monday.

The pilot cups do look very interesting but there not cheap, I found them online at £360 rears and £220 fronts.

I will keep searching.

Ooh, that is good value. I've just had a set of period Magnesium Minilites (Rare as a bird with 4 legs) reconned by Pristine for my 2.7 RS. £70 per wheel plus VAT.
 
I had the wheels on my last car powder coated and it gives a superb finish - far superior to paint and laquer in my opinion. However if you are a track fiend you need to be careful - apparently the heat generated in the hubs can melt the powder that is sandwiched between the wheel and your hub and stick the wheels to the hub. You might need a seperate set of wheels for trackdays - a good excuse to get some semi-slicks!!
 
Can you not to just get that part of the wheel blanked off so that none of the powder is then actually on the area that mates with the hub?
 
The problem with that is that you have an edge to the powder coat. The actual plastic coating doesn't adhere very well to the base metal and relies on the component being totally encapsulated in the plastic. If you have an edge it wont be long before the plastic coating starts to lift off and moisture getting under the plastic surface and spreading. That is the only downside to powder coating, if you penetrate it by scraping your alloys on a kerb you've got to be quick to get it repaired to prevent it from lifting and flaking off. However if you are careful not to kerb the alloys and make sure the grease monkeys at your local tyre fitting place take care with them when fitting new tyres the coating will last forever and maintian its finish. The coating is fairly tough - I lightly kerbed one of my alloys on my previous car which scuffed up the surface of the plastic a bit but it didn't get down to the metal and it was fine for years until I sold the car. In fact I sold the car to a mate at work about three years ago and he hasn't looked after the car at all so it's looking pretty tatty now but the alloys still look pristene.
