Just got my first 944 for track use

Hi all,

Rob here, just joined the forum as I have just got my first 944 (a 944 S no less) which has been bought by myself and my business partner to turn into a bit of a track weapon.

I've driven it now to various places for 350 odd miles and all seems pretty well. The pil pressure sits just over 4 bar and is steady, drops a bit on idle as expected. The water temp never goes near half way really either so all seems well. Pulls cleanly up the rev range (sounding awesome as it does it I might add). There's three things I'm concerned about that I'd like your thoughts on if possible?

1) The transmission seems quite load from the back of the car. Not crunching or knocking or anything just a normal transmission noise, but I can always here it especially above 40mph or so. I've never owned a car with the transmission at the back let alone a 23 year old 944 so is this normal? I would say it's as load as the wind noise - as noticeable.

2) There is a ticking sound from the engine once I open the bonnet. It's not load but it certainly isn't quiet. As it's going to be a track weapon I want the engine to be strong. I've done some research and it seems to be a number of possibilities from just loud injectors to the lifters. Any thoughts? I've never owned a 944 before so not sure what ticking is what!

3) The low speed steering is pretty heavy, but I think that's to be expected. What isn't is that at certain points of turn at low speeds I can hear and feel what could be the steering wheel grinding against the column, as if it's catching/too close/ too tight. Doesn't seem to do it at higher speeds.

OK I think that's probably enough for now! Thanks very much for whatever help you can offer and I look forward to contributing to the forum and helping out and may well see some of you at the track/racing!

Quick picture too!

Hi,
Transmiision whine is common, turn the radio up,ticking noise is is normal, power steering is not light unlike modern cars, drive it and enjoy.

Hello Rob,

I'm sure someone sharper with the mechanics will be along shortly but it's very possible that both 1) and 2) aren't actually problems - just normal for your car. Best bet would be to get yourself along to a meeting and get others to have a listen and also listen to their car. I think both situations could be normal.

Not so sure about the 3rd issue but someone will be along to make a comment as there's quite an intelligent bunch on here for diagnosing issues.

Welcome to the forum.

ps - you may wish to say where you are in the UK.

Thanks guys I am in the UK. Yes hoping 1 and 2 are no worries. 3 there is something off sure it shouldn't be rubbing like that - heavyness is OK though.

Also forgot to mention am going to take it down to EMC Motorsport for those guys to give it the quick once over on Saturday.

EMC is a good move - they really know their 944's.
Tranny whine - standard.
Ticking sound - my S2 does it...presume its the injectors.
Heavy steering - not uncommon for the offside engine mount to collapse due to heat of exhaust manifold resulting in fouling of steering link. Get EMC to check the mounts. Replacement straigtforward. New mounts have an orange colour.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum.

Transmission whine 'could' be normal on an old gearbox with plenty of miles under its belt. The gearbox oil should be changed every 4 years at least, a lot of cars never have this done. I change mine very 2 years - it doesn't whine. Worth a try in the first instance.

The injectors are quite noisy. Try to listen to a few other cars to gauge if yours is okay

Grinding through the wheel is not normal. Could be the rack or maybe the steering shaft. The shaft is nice and cheap at circa ÂŁ80

EMC really know their 944's and have a good reputation for honesty (sometimes brutally so [:D] )

Hi and welcome
Dont know where you are but as you're taking it to EMC, guessingg the midlands somewhere.
I'm in Leicester and the East Midlands Region is meeting tomorrow Monday evening 7.30 ish at the Coopers Arms Weston - on Trent - near Donington.
I should be there in one of mine.

It looks quite purposeful on those 1986 model year wheels, but remember that youll need ET52.3mm (nominal, for a 7" wide rim) offset wheels if youre looking for larger diameter replacements (1986MY telephone dials and series one wheels have ion offset of 23mm).

The steering might be a groan from the pipes if it only occurs under heavy load i.e. not rolling forward or backwards. new fluid might improve/cure it.
Tony

If you think the transmission is noisy now, just wait until you remove the boot carpet [:D]

Oil change may help though

I found my turbo had a much quieter box than my two 924S's

All of the above. Also ask to have cam chain and tensioner checked.Apart from that drive and enjoy, and welcome to the 16v club.

Hi from a fellow 'S' owner :)

1 can be quite normal, change the gearbox oil and see if that makes a difference.
2 Ticking sound is possibly the injectors, mine does this as well
3 Could be the steering shaft, fortunately they are not very expensive.

My 'S' is a 'D' plate and came with the late offset teledials (52.3 mm)

944Ss should have late offset wheels; but will eat my Arai if they arent 1986 wheels.

Who is going to bring the brown sauce? [:D]

Thanks for all the replies guys much appreciated. I did think they were the 52.3 offsets being an 88 car. Probably looking replace them with cup wheels as part of the work so it can fit 944 turbo brakes for extra caliper and pad area.

Gearbox oil is a good call will at it to the (long) list of tasks - really looking forward to the EMC visit!

I'm actually up north (in Cheshire so not too far north) but EMC well recommended so worth the trip down it seems!

When you are at EMC have a look at some of the cars [8D]. There is an especially awesome maritime blue S2 race car in there at the moment [:D].
