Just put a deposit on this 1992 944 S2

Very excited as I've just put a deposit on this 944 S2. My first Porsche and I love it! Lots to learn but very different to the brand new cars I've had for the past few years. I love that it has character that modern day cars just don't have. Anyway here is a couple of photos. I'll put more up when I've collected it.

I got my S2 4 yrs ago as a temp while the 993 was having work done. Still got it, love it. Practical, economical, easy to work on and fun. Just been working on son's gf's Z4 and they are not made to the same standard, quite revealing.

Welcome - car looks fantastic and a very late one too. There are great cars, the depth of their ability is really quite something.
 
Jon, how do you know from the pictures that it is a late one?

Stuart, I don't think those are sports seats. It does look like a nice car though.

Probably because it has a bridge spoiler, just visible if one increases the image size.

Good combination - colour and interior. You do realise Porsche ownership is for life [;)]
 
Ha ha yeah it's a late one registered 6th Jan 1992. I've never owned a Porsche so there's so much to learn. The car is in great condition but there is a few jobs I need to do when I get it. When should the cam chain and tensioner be replaced? And any idea of cost of that job?

I really want it now so I can actually get to know it better. Hopefully pick it up next week some time.

Cam belt is every 5 years or 60k, whichever first.

Is that the car from 4* Classics? If so, I used to own it a few years ago. It's a good car...

Yeah it is from 4 star. That's interesting that you used to own it. It does seem a good, solid car. Is that the belt every 60k or chain? I thought the belt was more often than that?

Got my S2 owners manual on the desk and it says definitvely 48K miles for the cambelt, and modern advice is 4 years maximum.

The chain and tensioner is a different thing as not in the schedules. Most will have been done, but well worth checking. The tensioner pads should be white, not a dark brown. If the chain has stretched it can potentially wear the cam lobes. 100K miles has been mentioned as a guideline for the chain, the pads obviously deteriorate over time as well as miles.

Steve Rose has done a fantastic guide to the pads, should be in this month's Porsche Post.

No surprise really, I have owned many of them. We had that car around 2011 I think it was. I remember it being a particularly good car, it drove very well and was nice and tight. Cabin was in sublime condition. We touched up a little bit on the outer sills and did the bottom of the front wings and reconolised the chairs steering wheel and gear gaiter. When we sold it, it appeared a week later on 4* website for £3k more..so this is not the first time they have handled it. They are probably selling it for the chap whom they sold it to the first time, or maybe even the same chap we sold it to. Good car.. you have picked a good one. All of 4*'s cars seems to be of a high standard.

My bad.. I was sure it was 60k/5years..

That's great to hear that it's a good one. There's doesn't seem to be too much to do on it. The only big thing I need to look at is the cam chain and tensioner side of things because it has just rolled over the 100k miles mark and I don't think there is any evidence of it being done before that. Cam belt was fairly recent. I take it that Porsche specialists and OPCs will always change the balance shaft belt at the same time as the cam belt??


I had a good look through the service history, which is very extensive, but there is so much to take in when buying a car so I'll study it more when I take delivery.

The guy who has sold it to me bought it from 4 star a couple of years ago so maybe it's the same guy you sold it to.

White is the fastest colour, especially for turbos..

On my own S2's I have always changed the chain and pads as soon as I buy a car (among other bits such as belts, waterpump etc) but also pay attention to the camshaft sprockets, they have a habit of loosing teeth if the chain is on there too long.

I check my chains and slipper pads on my s2's every belt change. But then again I change my front engine oil seals, tensioners, rollers, waterpump, thermostat and head gasket as well every second belt change, which for me is every 8 years for the whole lot and a belt change 4 years later. The head gasket is just because after 10 years they look like they have been used for target practice with a shotgun. But I don't do many miles in any of mine, but then again I doubt many people are doing the expected 10k to 12k miles a year in theirs, but if they are, they should use a schedule of 40,000 to 48,000 miles for the belts (as well as taking a peek at the chain and slippers) and 80,000 to 96,000 miles for the whole lot to be replaced.

But that is easy for me to say and relatively expensive if you are using a specialist. But not as expensive as repairing the damage that any of this failing can cost.
