Not to be out done the the 944 boys, how many miles on your 924?

I'll start the ball rolling.

1983 924 lux 247,000. (engine rebuild at 110,000) Now deceased.
1979 924 lux 142,000. (original engine)
1980 924 turbo 164,000 (engine rebuild at 89,000)
1982 924 turbo 63,500 (no I havent missed a 1 out) Still tight as a drum.

Now you know why I call myself the nutter.

108 k on mine (its says 37k but a change of speedo earlier this year adds to the complications)

Seems to be the case David, and they all go to zero after 99,999 anyway [:)]

I'm amazed by the amount of faulty speedos I hear about - I wouldn't be surprised to hear that 15-20% of 924 have a replacement speedo fitted at some time.

I think I read that speedos/trip meters are repairable but I don't recall who fixes them.

Never had a speedo fail in 16 years. The closest I came was when the trip in the 931 stopped working. It must've (must HAVE) been a small piece of debris in the mechanism, because on a run along the M42 towards Birmingham which is very bumpy it started working again with no input from me. Mind you this particular turbo that I have must have the koni shock-absorber option, I have never driven such a stiff 924 before.
I can drive over a two bob bit (old money) and tell if it's heads or tails.

my little car has done 170+ not sure of exact miles as the mile counter stopped some time back

I would tell you mine but my car is in the garage at the mo having some seriouse work being done to it. but im sure i recall mine being over 200,000 and thats for a 1980

They can do but if you peel back the bezel and take out the innards, you will see the invitable crack in the drive gear for the odometer which lets it slip on the shaft. I repaired mine by supergluing a 5mm nutsert on each boss, and cutting of the excess, restoring the press fit and supporting the material against further cracking. So far so good.

Surely a trick question, don't all 924 speedos stop working at 80,000 miles ?[:D]

Well I've only managed to get mine up to 82k so far (4k not particularly impressive in the last year but it was off the road for a couple of months for me to tinker). I bought the car with 47k on the clock 4 years ago, and am really looking forward to the 94k mark when I will have driven 50% of the total miles [:)]. The car has TEN previous owners who only managed a measly average of 4700 miles [].

Mine is currently on 98,500. I've done about 6,500 of those in the 7 months I've owned it.

My 1986 924S has just done 73,000 miles, although a new speedo was fitted at 71,000 as the odometer had stuck.
I use a fuel injection cleaner from time to time, which I add to the fuel tank and the engine sound great-I think with care it should be ok for another ten years! As I only use the car at weekends, I try to give it at least two long runs per week.

I had all the fluid levels checked by my local garage yesterday, including the gearbox oil. My gearbox feels firm with no sloppiness at all- has anyone experienced gearbox problems and needed a replacement or a rebuild?

My journey to the Front Runner event from Essex totalled 220 miles round trip, and the oil level does not appear to have gone down, so the engine seems tight.

Cheers,
Noel

Hi Noel, what injector cleaner do you use?

Phil

Hi Phil,
Question on Fuel Injection Cleaner.

The fuel injection cleaner that I use is Redex petrol treatment, which I add straight to the fuel tank.

When I first bought my car 3 months ago, I topped up the fuel tank with half a bottle of Redex before a 20 mile journey, once every three weeks. The engine now really sounds great- an electronic purr- I really believe that Redex works.

I used it some used ago with an Audi 80 2 litre (130,000 miles) over a number of years and the result was also excellent, with no ill effects whatsoever. The only caveat is that I think you should only add it to at least a half full tank of petrol to avoid unbalancing the petrol/injection cleaner ratio.
The other one that I have used is STP, also with good results.

All the best,
Noel

Sorry tiptronic. Were you at front runner, I was looking out for a 924 or 944 wielding female but didn't see any, mind you I wasn't there long.
