Just dragged my supersport out of the garage after 6 months, started ok, died whilst driving, took 10 mins to restart, got within a mile of home and it died and will not start, obviously a fuel pump / relay? problem.

went to open the engine compartment and the handle snapped off in my hand, can i get it open by removing the light?

any advice on both probs welcome

Check all the fuses an carriers for clean contact. They can often suffer from mild corrosion causing bad connection.

Fuse ok, will test for current passing thru, if none, then its prob the relay

Any knowledge on opening the engine lid? i may have to cut a window in the cable runner in the wing and grab the cable, but thats a bit drastic i think

re cable release there are details in the bentley book on how to release the bonnet, involves removing bumper and drilling holes in certain positions, I'll see if I can get you more details if you like though it'll be later in the week

John

Hi john, thats the front bonnet that you can open by drilling,

have now managed to open the engine compartment, went under rear wing, cut small window section in brass tube and grabbed the cable with pliers and got it open,

tested fuse to pump, ok, no poer to it, ran a live feed, heard the pump running but still not firing up....

bit bamboozled here

At least you've got a few nice toys to play with while the SS is off the road.

AFAIK the DME relay does not only power the pump, it powers the DME & fuel injectors so if the relay has failed, just running a bypass to the pump won't help.

The drawing of the relay is from a 944 site, but it should be the same. The ignition key turns on the main relay, which powers up the DME, the DME then runs the pump. If the first relay is not closing, then nothing will happen when you bypass.

Sam,i had a similar problem on my 3.2 .After changing the dme i still had the same problem.I then got an auto spark to do a few checks and he told me it was the engine speed sensor marked dg where it plugs in.This runs from the engine bay to the flywheel .There are two located there both have the same part nos but have different functions.

Ok thanks liam, DME relay changed, still not starting, could you be a bit more accurate on the location of the speed sensors, fone pic or something if possible, would be most grateful

You will find the crank/speed sensor on the flywheel housing! remove left hand rear wheel and mounting plate. Berny

Before faffing with the speed sensors try and see if you can borrow a known working ECU off someone. Tick that off the list before you change the sensors they about £90 each and a pain in the ass to fit.

It sounds just like a problem I had, changed the dissy cap rotor and the two speed sensors, cleaned up all the earthing points and came out over £200 lighter. Still didn't run for any length of time. Borrowed a secondhand ECU, problem solved. Bought the said ECU for £140, so the whole escapade cost me nearly £400 if you include the forgetful extras. You can also get your ECU test from £30, any repairs are obviously extra.

Driving my daily runner to work on wednesday this week.Engine management light came on .Put it in to have it checked the next morning.Guess what yup thats right needed a new crankshaft sensor.
Are you any closer to finding out whats up.

Nope, will have to try and borrow a dme unit from someone, i think i will also get the aftermarket immobiliser removed

its doing my nut in

Ok, the simplest things cause the biggest problems....

it was the little bunch of wires allatched to the positive battery lead, they were loose, just tightened them up and the thing started first go, been fine all day now.....

at least i have a spare relay now
